I wouldn't go by what's 'cute' - that cute littel baby is going to be an adult MUCH longer that he'll be a baby -
I don't really see the big deal in IF you're ok with Ben .........
If you don't like nicknames, then it would be a problem -
And people WILL assume his name is Benjamin - but again, I don't think that really matters unless you'd want people to use his full name KWIM?

I love it! It's a nicer name (IMO) than Benjamin! DS2 is Henry George- people tell me it's a very old man name. I don't care.

I love the name Daniel. I don't like David. And I agree with pp about Benedict Arnold. that's what comes to my mind first.

I *personally* don't like the name Benedict. Cutesy baby naming thing aside, it's just a harsh sounding, old fashioned name to me. I think if you like the whole Ben/Benny thing a as nickname the name Bennett is really cute as some others have mentioned.
I know it's NOT what you wanted to hear, lol, but choose a name that you REALLY love. You don't want to be pressured into a name you're going to end up hating for years to come. Good luck!

Personally I say use it. Benedict is big NOW but in 20yrs ?? who knows. I know men who have average first names but use their middle names. Other grown men with names like Richard that actually WANT to be called ****. My brother Danny.. I NAMED HIM MYSELF is Daniel. Still its always been Danny or for him its "Dan"
AJ has a first and middle name that *I* wanted but I never use LOL Its awkward for me to hear anyone use her first name. She is and always shall just be AJ. Then there was the beginning of first grade when she said she wanted her first full name used.
I hate my name its OLD and boring and serious.. library lady.. Veronica. But meh, its mine. I work with it. We all do.
Just think when he's a grown man of great success .. Benedict *IS* a strong name! ;)
This reminds me that Sunday we were borrowing a classroom for my girl scout troop meeting and there's a boys name taped to the rug.. Atticus! Now there's a whopper but that boy will have some serious expectations to be huge and great and take the world by storm. The name just radiated.. "WOW" all the other moms looked at the name and were just impressed. haha

I couldnt give my DC a name I didn't like. Its ok not to love a name if DH does but I would have to at least like it. What about Bennett, Bently, Beckett, Benson??

I think of eggs. But then Benedict Robert definitely makes me think Benedict Arnold.
I love the name David and the sound of David Robert. Or Robert David. Always liked the nicknames for Robert too.
It really only matters that you and DH like the name.

Ha! My dd is Amelia. Old lady name if I ever heard one. But it fits her perfectly. My youngest is Kate. Fits her, too.
I hate nicknames, it's like nails on a chalkboard when someone calls her "meals".  But I introduce them as Amelia and Kate.

I kind of like Benedict Robert. Don't love it alone but flows nicely together.
I like Bennett too, but not with Robert.

Thanks everyone! It's so interesting to hear everyone's different ideas. Although Bennett is a nice name, we're into more traditional names.
We're broadening the search now. Though we like Peter, it's off the list because I think "Peter Robert" sounds too much like "Peter Rabbit"  I kinda like Nicholas Robert. Daniel, David, and James are on the list, and I've been drawn to the name Andre, even though it's not a name I originally considered. We'll also keep Benedict on the list as a possibility too.
This is hard!! Any other ideas for some classic names that aren't TOO common??

I like the name Benedict. It's different without being too off the wall.
My son is Nicholas so I love that name.
I also like Anthony.
And Veronica, I don't think your name is old fashioned. I love it and it's on my list for if/when I have a girl!

It's funny you say that because Gregory is another name DH likes a lot. His favorites are Benedict, Gregory, Ryan, Daniel, Peter and Charles. Of his choices I think my favorite is Daniel. I have a hard time deciding what I like... I get sick of a name pretty fast & I change my mind a lot. My favorites at the moment are David, Nicholas, and James. There are some other names I like (such as Andrew, Luke, Anthony, etc.) but can't use for certain reasons so those choices are out. My older son is Matthew, which we both loved right away & was a super easy choice for us. This time is much harder!!
