Early intervention for walking
Dd is 18 months and won't walk on her own. She has been cruising for 6 months and is great with push toys, holding hands etc but won't let go. She has taken steps on her own here and there but that's it. Just came from the pedi and it's time to start the process. Dr said to go to a neurologist to rule anything out and then once that comes back fine which he thinks it will, call the school district and tell them what's going on to get the ball rolling.
Does this sound right? What did you do if you went through this? TIA

Re: Early intervention for walking
I would call the county's early intervention number right away, it may take some time to get a neurologist appt and I would want to get an eval set up and PT started if she qualifies, as soon as possible.
I am confused on why the doctor told you to call the school district as involving the CPSE doesn't take place until your LO is about to turn 3.
Good luck!

ITA with above...both EI and specialist appointments can take a while so there is no harm in starting both processes now.and yes services are provided by ei until age 3...as then the school district takes over. Good luck!

Early intervention for walking
Tx girls. I thought it was weird he told me to call the school district. Plus my friend who has her dd in EI said that's not what she did. So I just called the county line, gave my info and they said they would assign me a person that would get in touch in 5 business days. Then we go in for a consult and they give me a list of agencies. Once I pick we set up an in home evaluation. I feel better having started the process. I've waited long enough. Still waiting on a call back from the neurologist.

SD handles 3 and up. Call the county EI. For Suffolk its dept of health. Not sure about Nassau. You make apt with the county, fill out a bunch of paperwork and they give you a list of EI centers. You choose one, call to make an apt for eval and they come to you. Then if approved, you have another apt with county a month later to determine services. Good luck!

They will still do the eval. But may want LO to be seen neurologist before giving services if qualified. They make DD get a hearing test before giving speech therapy to rule out any issues in case she wasn't speaking bc her hearing was off. Good luck!

Tx, yeah I am still waiting on a call back from the neurologist to set up that appt. I figure by the time I hear from EI, get into see them I would have already seen the neurologist.
I feel better that at least I can finally do something about this and started the process.

I want to say it took me about a month from contacting EI to getting his eval done. I'm glad you got the process started. Hopefully there's not a months-long wait for the neurologist. I set up an appt with a developmental pediatrician for DS and the wait was 5 months!

I know. Some of these drs waits are insane. My pedi said if I have a problem and they tell me three months to call him and he will call. He said they should get me in within 2 weeks.
