Early Intervention - Re: Walking
My Daughter is almost 17 mos. and still not walking. Her pediatrician recommended that I called Nassau County Early Intervention Program. They took some info. and will be calling me in 5-7 days. Does anyone have any experiernce with them? I heard its a free program and that they come to your house. Is this is a state funded program? do I have to get approved for the services? Whats the catch? lol
Thanks so much!!

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
I called them for DS's speech and texture issues when he was 1. No catch at all. For NY it doesn't cost anything. Usually 1 or 2 people will show up to the house to evaluate your DD. From the evaluation they'll figure if she qualifies to get EI and if she does then they'll help you pick an EI program in the area to come and work with her.
DS didn't qualify for NY's EI, but we moved to NJ when he was about 15 months and we had him evaluated around 22 months and he qualified.
Good luck and it's all good. Everyone I've met in the EI program are so sweet and helpful

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
your DD needs to get approved for services if she meets the right criteria. meaning she is behind.
not everyone is approved for EI..
also to qualify for PT it is very difficult.. they will usually not qualify a child for PT just for walking until they are 18 months or older, unless there are other significant delays that would require PT.

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
DS was already in PT due to his torticollis and cranial helmet, but did not walk until after 17 months.
Generally speaking, without other delays, lack of walking will not qualify for services until at least 18 months.

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
I'm not in NY so didn't go through that process, but my DD is hypotonic (low tone) and our pediatrician had us get evaluated by the Physical Medicine group at the hospital we go to around 14/15 months. Our insurance ended up paying for 8 weeks of therapy and therapeutic orthotics to help correct her extreme pronation (her feet turn in on her arches and so she can't balance properly). After getting the orthotics, she was taking steps within a few days of putting them on, and now only walks at 19.5 months.
If you don't end up qualifying through EI, definitely check out your options and see if you can find a Ped Orthopedic group that will help.
Good luck!

Hopefully some one will confirm or tell me I'm wrong - but the other issue is once you have them evaluated, you have to wait 6 months for another evaluation. In your case, you might want to wait until 18 months, otherwise if you have her tested now and she doesn't qualify, you can't get her evaluated again until 6 months later.
DS is almost 20 months and literally has 2 words. A few people have told me to just wait until he is 2 to have him evaluated, as the standards for 18mos and 2 yrs are very different and he would never qualify under the 18 mos standards since his comprehension is high. If we have him tested now, we would have to wait until he's 26 months if he's denied services to retest him.
Again, I am not 100% sure if the 6 month waiting period is true, hopefully someone with direct experience will reply.

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
My 11 month old just got evaluated today for PT. She is not crawling, pulling up to stand, can't support weight, etc. I am in suffolk but I think the procedure is pretty much the same. First I made the call then met with a coordinator who called the agency for evaluation. Then the evaluator called me to set up an appointment. They came to my house for everything. The PT who came today told me she will most likely qualify for services. Honestly, not walking at 17 months is not really behind, does she cruise, support weight on her legs, etc? My DS didn't walk until he was 17.5 months.

Re: Early Intervention - Re: Walking
Unless things have changed since DS was in EI fot speech you do not need to wait 6 months between evals. DS was evaluated at 22 months for speech (didn't qualify) and then again at 25 months (qualified). I tihnk they encourage you to wait 6 months but I don't believe it's a requirement.
There are many therapists on here so hopefully they can chime in with more info.

Yes she can, she can walk by holding our hands and can get up by holding on to something, she can also climb the stairs. I am just going by the Drs recommendation.
