We don't an around Ds. We just roll with it and we wouldn't leave just cause he was getting tired. Because we have always been like this ds has adapted pretty well.

Same here, she was up till midnight on Christmas Eve

Agreed. We don't let bedtime tell us when to leave. It's not like it's a frequent thing. If he's tired, he'll fall asleep. We will bring his pajamas if we expect to be out late and his toothbrush too.

Not to say we haven't used the excuse. But if we are all having fun, bedtime isn't boss.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

My kids never go to sleep early. My 2 year old was bouncing off the walls until 10 or 10:30 both nights. I've never been a schedule person and my kids can sleep anywhere. I wouldn't leave somewhere because they were tired, but all kids are different.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

When my first was around one I probably posted something similar. I was so caught up with his schedule it literally made me crazy. Then one of my friends that had older kids really made me see the light. There are so few holidays and it's so important to share those moments and times with family and loved ones. A few nights a year isn't going to make a difference in the long run but, the missed memories and time with family that may or may not be around years from now will. So, we live it up on the holidays - my kids are now 7 and 4 but, I've been doing this since my oldest was 2/3 - it's made for such such nicer stress free holidays. Are the kids way off schedule for a few days - absolutely, but we all have wonderful memories to balance it out! So to answer the question - both Christmas eve and new years eve my kids are probably up past 1-2am! My kids are not the type to fall asleep anywhere but their beds so it's all or nothing! lol!

How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

It's. only a couple times a year so we stay and have a good time. My daughter is not the type to want to leave anywhere though, she likes parties and gatherings, so she is good to go. I wasn't raised to leave early either, we stayed till my parents were ready to go.

How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

I think the age of a child makes a big difference My DD is 7 months old and when she is over tired no fun is being had. I dont feel bad leaving early or keeping to a schedule b/c when a mom goes home from a party the night has just begun. Maybe a 2 or 3 year old can stay and party and just sleep in the next day but I know for a baby it can be rough on everyone.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

We've been traveling since Christmas Eve. 4 nights in a pack and play... Every night DS has been up 1-3 hours past his bedtime. We don't let his bedtime dictate when we leave. Yesterday, he just learned how to clap and army crawl. Let's just say his night sleep has been a disaster. Thank god we are headed home today!!!!

My sister and brother both have kids so they understand, but the rest of my extended family all has grown kids so their memory of babies and toddlers is a little foggy.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

So hard. DD1 was a nightmare from 1-3 in general. Forget about past her 7 pm bedtime. She couldn't handle it. We couldn't handle it. She couldn't fall asleep anyplace but a bed etc. We had such a hard time b/c we wanted to stay but couldn't meanwhile we had friends that could stay way past and we were mad lol. She just wasn't flexible. We were maybe able to push it until 8/8:30. It was a rough time.

Now she's 4 and amazing and fun. We were out until 10 pm on christmas day and she asked to go but hung out on the couch with mil just resting. Christmas eve was at our house but she stayed up until 9 or so.

DD2 is 21 months and is a different story. She can hang with no problem. She's a lot more flexible so now it's not a problem.

We always got eye rolls when we left early but to be honest nobody wants to hear a baby have a tantrum b/c they were tired.

We also learned, people aren't flexible with kids. they just don't care lol. It was very hard for our families b/c we did have the first gc on dh's side. So they were not used to going out early etc.

You have to so what you feel is right for you. You also can't care what other people think. Sounds mean but if hey can't be flexible for a BABY, then why should suffer the consequences after?

Thanks for all the responses. Dh and I definitely agree that it's ok to make exceptions for holidays and special occasions and to keep dd out later than her normal bedtime because family time is important. We knew dd would be up later than usually Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and were ok with that. What upset us was no one seemed to realize that dd does have a limit and can only take so much stimulation and so many hours of being awake past her bedtime. We asked politely several times if they could let her open her gifts so we could head home and we kept feeling like they would just shrug it off and kept us waiting. There are other kids in the family whose parents keep them out late, so I guess they figured we wouldn't have a problem doing the same. But every kid is different. On Christmas Eve dd didn't get to sleep until 11:30 pm and then she woke a few times during the night and was up for good at 7am, and we couldn't get her to take a nap, I guess she was so excited about her gifts from Santa. So by Christmas night she was basically running on about 6 hours of broken up sleep from the night before and we could tell she was just done. If she had actually slept well the night before and taken her nap we would have stayed later on Christmas. But things don't always work out the way you'd like them to when you have little ones.

I'm planted firmly in the camp of "you do what works best for your child" I have 2 and my mil, mom, sister, whomever doesn't have to deal with them when they hadn't gotten enough sleep and are miserable. My kid, my call. We left Christmas eve about 9:15 or so just so they could get some rest. No one said boo to me. Don't let them get to you, you did the right thing. Chat Icon

Totally agree. It doesn't sound to me like you were being strict about a schedule, it sounds like you were trying to respond to the needs of your dd who was telling you she was too tired! You have to do what works for you.

My life never has and never will revolve around my kid. I don't know if he inherently knows that or I'm just lucky but he's super mellow. If he's tired, he'll lay down. Otherwise, he is hanging. Last year he was up until about 2 on NYE and slept until 11 the next day so he adapts. I don't have to deal with a nightmare kid the next day. I may feel differently if I did.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

I think you have to do what's best for you - but you can't expect everyone ELSE to adapt to your kid's bedtime routine (Not saying YOU expect that ...........that's just my general opinion)

When we are out or have company, it's a free for all - I don't enforce a strict bedtime on the weekends or holidays - Mine are now 3 & 5.
There have been nights they've gone until 1 am - and there have been nights they BOTH have left their cousins playing with their toys and disappeared into their beds Chat Icon - I don't push them either way

The only time I'm crazy about sleeping is if we have something important going on the next day (ie: school, a family event, party etc)

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

Our dd is generally a trouper and does great out of routine. Our Christmas eves aren't done til way after midnight, and she did great the past 2 years. Other holidays/family events also frequently go late, and she does fine. But having said that, I'm lucky she goes with the flow. If she happened to be a child who needs her routine, then I wouldn't hesitate leaving early if we needed to.

We were actually all sick for both Christmas Eve and day, so we were all home and in bed both days.

However, SIL is visiting from OOT with her family and we've been at my MIL's with them the past 3 nights and have stayed out about an hour after DS's bedtime (8 is normal time). DD toughed it out longer at 2 hours past her bedtime.

They were both done by the time we left each night and complete wrecks trying to get packed up to leave. I would have left around those times if we were feeling well for the holidays.

IMO when you have young children there is only so much adapting you can expect them to do even if it is a holiday.

Re: How late do you let your 2 year old stay up on holidays?

I think my 2-year-old got to bed at around 1am on Christmas Eve (her usual bedtime is 8pm). She was having a blast so I saw no reason to end our night early. If she was getting cranky early in the night, I would have put her down to sleep at my sister's house.

From day one, I've made it so my kid adapts to our lifestyle and not the other way around and because of that she's pretty go with the flow.

And if I announced we were leaving during dinner my family would have gone nuts! But they'd also help entertain DD and keep her happy!

This is me exactly.
I have never lived MY life on a schedule, and because of that DD has NEVER been on a schedule, even as a baby.
She ate on demand, slept on demand, etc.
We never had routines, we don't eat dinner at a certain time, some nights she is asleep before 8 pm, others she is up until 1030 pm. If she is tired she will sleep.
I'm very free spirited though.
I let my child wear white to baptisms and all....
