fasting...
Could you even fathom the thought of fasting for 24 hrs. I was just on NFR and under the posting Yom Kippur...someone printed jewish law and it says that preggo women should still fast on this day regardless of pregnancy. I am jewish but I could never do that to my baby! Anyone thinking of doing this? Whats your thoughts on this topic?

I really don't think I could at this point!!! I am more scared about only eating ice chips for however many hours I'm in labor than I am at the thought of giving birth!

I posted it. I didnt mean to stir up controversy. I was just looking to satisfy a curiosity and learn about my own culture. Sorry if anyone is hurt or freaked out by this. Perhaps it was my mistake by posting it. I meant no harm.
ETA: I read the related topic and now I am trying to figure out how fasting while pregnant can be justified. I can't find any good reason.

I heard from an orthodox friend of mine that pregnant women should not fast on Yom Kippur. I know that I am not going to...I dont like the thought of not feeding the baby (or myself for that matter )for 24 hours

I always thought that pregnant women were told not to fast on Yom Kippur. DH will fast, but not me! (to be fair, I'm not even Jewish, but I like to celebrate the Holidays with DH and his family)

I'm not Jewish, but I work with a few women who are very religious and they all say that pregnant women do not have to fast.

Wow I looked online and everything does say a pregnant woman should fast as should a nursing mother. A woman who has just given birth however can eat if it is within 72 hours after the birth. I don't get it at all.
(This interests me since my sister converted and is trying to get pregnant)

There's no way I'm going to fast. I wake up every morning starving. I'm not going to deny myself or my baby food. A sick mommy will be no good to him.

I dont think u stirred up any controversy at all. I think you posting was really informative actually. I was shocked to read such a thing. Actually there is another jewish ritual that makes me crazy...its the one about not going on cemetarys. My dad passed away last nov. and his unveiling is oct 22. I will be 8 months preggo and jewish law says I cant go!

Im not jewish and I dont think I would be able to do that, and even if you have gestational diabetes too you still cant?
Im catholic and on fridays we should not eat meat but if you are pg you can, so I do.

Here's just a small example of why I'm not overly religious. Pregnant or not, I think it's extremely important for you to be there for the unveiling- I know that no "Jewish law" would keep me from being there. Of course you have to do what you're comfortbale with- I'm not trying to sway you in any way. And I'm really sorry about your dad.

I was just talking to my friend yesterday who practices the Muslim religion. They have to fast every day until sundown during Ramadan (sp?). His wife just gave birth last week so I was curious on how they handle that. He said that she can eat during the day because she is nursing. But when she is done she will have to "catch up" on the fasting. I guess she has to do it later on to make up for lost time. I found that to be interesting.....

Thanks and yes I am definitely going to my dads unveiling. Probably will be talked about but hey whatever. My family is not overly religious either.

It is interesting- I have several Muslim students (7th graders) and quite a few of them are fasting, even though they told me that children are excused.
I have a few Jewish friends too, and none of them fasted on Yom Kippur. I'm not Jewish but I don't know how I could do it- never mind hunger. I get very queasy now when I don't eat.

I never fasted pre-PG, I wouldnt do it now - I went to Yeshiva growing up, and went to an Orthodox temple (funny - I'm married to an Italian!)
But - they NEVER said PG women should fast - they always said the baby was more impotrant on that day!!!!

A pregnant, nursing, or post partum woman does not have to fast. When you make up the lost days it can be whenever you want, as long as its before the next Ramadan. The elderly, sick, and children that have not hit puberty yet do not have to
