Disney cruises?
My mom told me that if I do the planning she will pay for this as a Christmas gift for the whole family.
It would be my parents, myself, my sister (early 30's like me) and ds (7).
What do I need to know? How many rooms would you get?
My parents are avid cruisers, but we've never done Disney.

Re: Disney cruises?
Is your sister going to get her own room or will she have to room in your parent's room? I would want to have a room for your immediate family, one for your parents, and one for your sister. In an ideal situation it would be a balcony room too. The thing is that a Disney cruise is about twice the price of other cruise lines. So your parents may want to have your sister in their room as a week on Disney can run 5000-9000 per room unless you go off peak and then it can be a little less. I would talk with your parents to see what they have in mind for a budget.

Re: Disney cruises?
I would probably try to share a room with my sister and DS to try to keep the costs reasonable for your parents.

Disney cruises?
If you are sharing, book the rooms with split baths. I know the less expensive rooms don't offer that. You will have toilet and sink in one room, sink and tub/shower in the other.
If you are going for actual Christmas, they have some pretty awesome activities on the ships. But you have to book NOW because the rates go up to about $10,000 for that week.

Re: Disney cruises?
If you are going to only have 3 or two in a room try to get an 8A room. They are HUGE. They are the "secret" rooms and are almost double the size of the normal room. There is no split bath but the size makes up for it. It is also just an ocean view which is alot cheaper but it has two huge sit in porthole windows. We always book room 5022 on the Fantasy or Dream for the 3 of us.

Re: Disney cruises?
Join the DISboards forums! I leave in 6 days for my first disney cruise with the family and I am on there as much as I am on here! I have learned sooo much over there!
I agree book early (like a year out if possible) - bec it is not like the airlines where the rates go up and down - they only go up! The first day the fare comes out is the cheapest it will ever be!

Not necessarily true regarding discounts. You can snag a GTY rate a little less than 60 days out which can save thousands! You have to pay in full though, and you get what you get in the category you select. I've seen some really good rates for upcoming cruises with GTY!

Re: Disney cruises?
I am going on my first Disney cruise (with DH and DS) in about 7 weeks. Very excited!
I used Kerri of Travel Kerri (vendor on this board) to help plan the trip and book it for me, and she was very helpful and really knows the ins and outs of the Disney cruise line and specific ships. So I would recommend using her.
The Disboards are definitely a good resource, too, but they can be overwhelming if you really are starting from square one and are somewhat of a Disney novice, as I am! (I've only been to Disney once, and it was like 25 years ago.)

Re: Disney cruises?
Oh that's an AWESOME gift.
As far as staterooms go, as a family of 5, you could do a Family Oceanview Stateroom. On the Dream and Fantasy that's a category 8 (no verandah, just a porthole) or 4 (verandah). You'd all fit in there are they do have a split bath. I would not recomemnd that though because the sleeping arrangement would be as follows: 1 queen bed, one sofa convereted to a bed, one pull down bed, and one trundle bed. It's just not comfortable IMO for 4 adults.
You could get 2 connecting staterooms of any size. Interior, Oceanview, or Verandah, Family or not to have the 5 of you. Then you'd have 2 bathrooms and much more space.
Do you know which sailing you're looking at and which ship? On the Dream and Fantasy almost all staterooms connect. On the Wonder, there are very few connecting staterooms availabile so you need to book early. On the Magic they added more with the reimagineering, but there still aren't as many.
The possibilities are endless with the 4 ships and then some special sailings thrown in there (I'm booked on a double dip with Key West for the fall! ooooh ahhhh). So you'll need to think about where you want to go and the length of the cruise. Most people start with a 3 or 4 night Bahamian on the Dream. That's a great first cruise, but it doesn't give you nearly enough time to enjoy the ship. If it's in the budget, the 7 night caribbean sailings are fabulous. If it's not, try to find a 5 nighter, especially a double dip!
I looooooooove DCL so ask me anything. I could talk about DCL all day and night. From the food to the staterooms to the activities.... So amazing.

I've lucked out big time with *GT rates. IGT,OGT and VGT rates are a little different from GTY rates but people use GTY to apply to both. If you have flexibility with when you travel and your dining time, etc, then it's great.
