breastfeeding moms who supplement w formula
Good morning,
What is your feeding routine? How many oz of formula do you give after breastfeeding? My DD can def eat 2 oz but sometimes she can take 3 or 4 oz. I always give her my breasts first and when I pump I get about 1.5oz.
Thanks ladies.

I don't BF b/c DD won't latch but I do pump and supplement. She eats 2-2.5 oz every 3-4 hours which her dr says is enough for her right now. Sometimes it's BM, sometimes it's formula. They don't want her to have 3oz yet. She's 25 days old.

Why cant she have 3oz? Is she still hungry after 2.5?
I EP for 7 mnths. When I added formula at first it was just 4oz a day rest was BM (20oz). Now at 9 months its most formula (16oz) and some BM (8oz). You can give any ratio you want or have.

Re: breastfeeding moms who supplement w formula
My full milk supply didn't come in until day 5 after her birth. I believe that is why it's taking a little longer for my dd to gain her birth weight back. Sat we saw that she gained 2oz thanks to the little extra formula.
Do newborns gain weight faster w the formula? It seems like it fills mine up because she is quiet & content after a feeding.

Once you get back to birth weight I wouldn't supplement if you are breastfeeding. Your body should produce what she needs, the more she nurses the more supply you will have. It's easier for them to have the bottle and I think they eat more than they really need.

I agree with all of this. Try not to supplement if possible to help increase supply.

I always give her my breasts first before supplementing though. How long did it take for your babies to get back to birth weight?

Not sure why they don't want us to go up to 3oz yet. I'll ask when we go back on Thursday. She seems satisfied after 2-2.5 oz and I even have to wake her to eat in the middle of the night b/c otherwise she'll sleep right through the night.
ETA: If she was still showing signs of hunger after a 2.5oz bottle, I'd give her more but so far she hasn't.

Two weeks. Do you have low supply? How long does she nurse for?

When I pump, I get up to 2 oz both breasts so thats why I'm giving her formula as supplement. I nurse her for 1/2 hr.

Why did your dr tell you to wake her during the night to eat?

how old is your dd? try to nurse for longer - when DD was small it would take 45 min - hour. And she nursed every 2.5 hours, so even though she wasn't getting as much as if I gave her a bottle, she was eating more often. Now that she has bottles she goes 3 hours. I would just be worried that if you get in the cycle of supplementing you won't produce enough to just BF because your body doesn't know she needs more, KWIM?

2 oz. is pretty good. As PP said, let her nurse longer. By supplementing you're telling your body that DD doesn't need so much milk.
