I am going to BF. Don't take this the wrong way, but I think if you think it's going to be hard, it will be even harder. I know it is not an easy thing to do, but I am trying to keep the "it's hard" out of my head. make sense?

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I BF until DD was 4 months old, and she's been on formula ever since. SO i did both.

BF'ing is a natural thing, but doesn't come naturally. It's soo rewarding, but it can be painful and tough in the beginning. My LC helped me through and without it, i would have quit 2 week in.

When I BF did latched perfectly, ate well, gained weight, but it was work and pain for me. I loved it, and was so glad i stuck it out for as long as I did. Breast milk is made for babies, she didn't have gas, hardly spit up and slept really well. But as her tummy matured, she did really well on formula too and still does.

I have some personal ailments from her birth that i need to take care after #2 is born that bF'ing will complicate and put off, which i can't do. So #2 will be formula fed from the beginning.

ETA: If you think it's going to be hard, it will. My advice-if you really want to bf, take a bf'ing class, line up and LC and make sure your PED is pro BF'ing and will support your efforts and not make you feel you are starving your baby and go immed for the formula.

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

Breastfeeder all the way here! Plus, my sister is a La Leche Leader, so I know I'll have her support when and if it gets rough.

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I am going to TRY to BF for 3 months until I go back to work and then once I do go back, if I have enough BM stocked up, I will have my MIL bottle feed her BM and then BF in the morning and at night. If not, she will be BF in the morning and at night and then formula fed the rest of the time.

I want to breastfeed and once I return to work I want to BF the first and last feeding and then pump and the baby bottle fed with that during the day. Hopefully it'll work out.

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I have such a pesimistic attitude. I guess because i listen to what other people say. I am taking a BFing class. I finish it up on Sunday. Thats why im going to try and not just make the decision to give her formula, because it might not be that difficult.

I guess i just have so much on my mind right now trying to prepare for my baby (which will be here in 3 weeks).

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I was very uncertain about what I wanted to do. I am going to breastfeed exclusively at first. Then see how it works when I go back to work. I may want to do both.

Breastfeeding and pumping with twins.

I will only use formula to supplement if I have supply issues.

Me too. Luckily there is a private feeding room in the daycare center in my building, so I can even feed at work & then pump for the in-between feedings if need be.

I am going to BF while I am home- about 8-10 weeks. When I go back to work I will use formula. Pumping at work will be a near-impossibility, which is why I will only do it for a little while.

However, I'm also asthmatic and on a steriod inhaler- haven't yet found any clear info about whether or not it's safe to BF on this medication, and being off it is not an option.

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I am going to breastfeed for as long as I can. I know it will hurt and will be hard but I think it will be best for my baby so I will just make the sacrifice. I will start the formula probably at 6 months.

Yes, that too... although I have no experience with the formula part.

Re: Formula or Breastfeeding

I will give BF a better try this time around. With DS, I made myself believe that I wouldn't be able to bc I had a breast reduction. DS had latching issues at the hospital and when I got home I waited almost a week before I tried again. I pumped but my supply was low. I gave him what I pumped and supplemented with formula. I only did it for 6 weeks.

I plan to mostly BF--hopefully this time for about 6 mos. I will supplement with formula for probably 2 feedings (1 daytime, 1 night), if all goes like it did last time.

I did it for almost 3.5 mos. last time and quit since I went back to work and can't and didn't like to pump...we'll see if I can make it longer this time.
