Have you or your child developed a mysterious rash in unmentionable areas of your bodies? If so, you might need to check the labels of any pre-moistened wipes that your family uses for an ingredient that’s causing allergic reactions in many users.It’s not a sudden reaction that happens the first or second time that you use the wipes. For some people, it takes daily exposure over a period of years before they have any kind of bad reaction to the wipes. One mother described to New York’s WCBS her experience after suffering for more than a year from painful, blistering rashes on her hands. “The rash was driving me crazy and it was sometimes showing up on my face too,” she said.

After keeping track of everything that she touched for more than a year, she sought help from an Ohio State University contact dermatitis clinic. Eventually, she solved the mystery: the baby wipes that she used on her kids were destroying her hands. Now she only uses water to cleanse them.

The problem chemical is a preservative used in both baby wipes and pre-moistened toilet wipes for adults. It’s called methylisothiazolinone. Wipe-makers are searching for a replacement, since there could be millions of people affected by allergies.

Test wipes before use on a less sensitive part of your body that’s acceptable to scratch in public: say, your forearm or the back of your hand. If you develop an allergy after use, stop using any products that you suspect might be causing the problem for at least a month, since it can take that long for a rash to clear up.

My DD has had a problem with wipes since day 1. We switched to Earths best wipes and diapers and her problem dissapeared. Why so may chemicals? We believe the Chlorine in the diapers was what was causing her sking to get a rash and then it would become so severe it looked like someone poured boiling water on her privates.

the amount of chemicals used in EVERYTHING is alarming.

Did you know that a LOT of fast food places use a bread "conditioner". I cant even wrap my brain around the fact they can put a chemical in in a Yoga matt and then put it in my food.

(CNN) -- Take a look at ingredients for some varieties of Subway's bread and you'll find a chemical that may seem unfamiliar and hard to pronounce: azodicarbonamide.

(From NPR): That compound found in commercially baked bread — yep, the one that's in yoga mats, too — is in the news again.

A report from the Environmental Working Group finds that the compound, azodicarbonamide, is found in close to 500 food products, from Pillsbury Dinner Rolls to Little Debbie products to Wonder Bread.

I am highly allergic to methylisothiazolinone. I have had patch testing done twice by the dermatologist and once by an allergist.

I have to avoid ALL products that contain this preservative, which is a lot. It's usually one of the last ingredients in shampoos, conditioners, creams, lotions, hand soaps, bath wash, etc. It's even in Cottonelle wipes. Even lotions marked "safe for sensitive skin" include this preservative.

When I give my kids baths, I have to check their products...even though they are marketed toward young children.

Unfortunately for me, once you develop the allergy, you will always be allergic.

There are horrific chemicals in everything from clothes to stuffed animals to furniture.

From day 1 my pediatrician said to moisten paper towels with water and never use wipes. That was 3 years ago. Whenever my DS is exposed (if out or at school) he'll break out for days.

We can only use water wipes on dd. Diapers.com has them. They are just water, with .1% fruit juice extract as a preservative. Everything else gives her a rash, even the sensitive and organic stuff, and even with just one use.

Ive been using the Kirkland Brand from Costco for a long time. No issues, until recently. I checked the ingredients and there is no mention of that chemical you mentioned. They say they are made with tenecel. Hopefully, that chemical isn't in there as a hidden chemical.

This is why I switched over to Seventh Generation wipes. Not so many chemicals.

I never had issues with Pampers sensitive wipes, but remember DD#1 had a horrible rash from Huggies. Not sure if this chemical is the reason. I never looked into it, just switched.

My ped. told me about this the other day. I found that anything with a scent gives my kids rashes. I stay away from that ingredient.
