binky ...and sleep

My DS depends on his binky to fall asleep. Once he is asleep he spits it out and is good until he stirs or wakes in the middle of the night. He definitely isnt hungry and doesnt cry for a bottle, but he cannot put himself back to sleep on his own. As soon as I give him the binky he is back out... this happens 2-3 times per night in the 11-12 hour interval he is sleeping at night time.
He also depends on his binky for naps.
I really would like to get a full nights sleep without running to replace his binky. Any advice ? Is crying it out the only way?

For the first time ever last night Hailey fell back to sleep without her pacifier. SHe woke up and i went to give it to her but i couldnt find it because she was laying on it. So i picked her up and she fell back to sleep on me. I didnt let her get into a full blown cry before i picked her up. I think that made a difference...
I wont do CIO i just cant handle it. But its definitely an option if you want to do it.

How old is he? I took my girl's away cold turkey at 7.5 mo for this reason. They couldn't find it on their own. I would try to soothe them another way like shhhing through the monitor and they learned to put themselves back to sleep after about 3 days. They never really screamed for it.

we didnt take away my son's binky until he was 2 1/2 years old. that being said, when he was younger i used to put multiple binkys in the crib so he could find one if he needed

I just took my ds's paci away. He is 11 months
He was waking up a few times a night looking for them when they fell out of the crib.
The transition was smooth. He cried a little he first night and has been pretty much good since.
He has the stomach virus right now so he has been waking up but I haven't given it back. I have just had to cude him a little the past few nights.

For all those who have kids still using their binky at 11 12 and 13 months, what did you do before your child was able to find their binky on their own? Did you always replace it in the night? How long did it last until they were able to find it?

Until he coudl find it on his own I had to get up and give it to him each time. I can't remember exactly; I would say at least by 8 months he could reach for it on his own? Maybe even sooner?
