Day care teacher may have shingles

Crap crap crap!! Ds day care teacher is out today getting bloodwork to test for shingles. He was around her all day yesterday. What, if anything, should I look for? Would I look for signs like chicken pox?

Ed: he's 2 and hasn't got the chicken pox vaccine yet

My MIL had shingles when DS was a newborn. The Dr said if you never had chicken pox, then you could catch chicken pox from someone with shingles. If you've had chicken pox, you should be ok. It's not quite as contagious as chicken pox because I think you have to actually come in direct contact with the rash. GL, I hope he doesn't get sick!

Re: Day care teacher may have shingles

Just to make you feel a little better, my mom had shingles and didn't realized what it was until after she had cared for DD all day. DD didn't get chickenpox from her.

I'd call your ped to see what they advise to be safe.

eta- I'm not sure if DD had the varicella vaccine at that point, I'm thinking she may have already had it. Still, just being around the person doesn't mean he'll necessarily get it. Good luck!

Thanks, I just spoke to the Ped and he also said it takes direct contact with the lesions to spread.

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Being exposed doesn't necessarily mean they will get the chicken pox.

Anyway - for chicken pox - if your DC does contract them, you will see red bumps starting on the tummy and back in approximately 10-14 days. Our daycare makes you keep the kids out for one week if they do contract chicken pox.

DS caught them from a classmate when he was about 11 months old - she had gone to the UK to visit family who were in the midst of chicken pox and brought them back to the daycare. DS and another girl were just shy of 1 and they both caught them. The children who were 13 months and vaccinated did not.

I wouldn't worry about it. Out of all the things out there I personally don't think chicken pox is that bad.

yep direct contact. My coworker had it when I was pregnant. OB told me it had to be direct contact with the rash otherwise you're fine

I would be wishing for the Pox since that means you won't have to get the vaccine ;) Of course the downside to that is that means your child can get shingles as they get older. I had it several years ago, and it was sucky!
