Ear tubes

I know I am jumping the gun...but just thinking about this. My son turned 7 months on xmas eve. A few days before New years he was diagnosed with broncholitis and put on a nebulizer. On New Years day we took him to urgent care and he had a ear infection. He took 10 days of antibiotics. We brought him banck to urgent care a few days after the antibiotics were done because he spiked a 102 fever. They saw fluid in his ear, but no infection. Within a few days he cough came back and he again spiked a 102 fever. Brought him back to urgent care, double ear infection. He's now on another course of antibiotics. In the midst of all this his first tooth came thru (not sure if it is related). This has all happened in 3 weeks. My MD was on vacation plus the holidays so we'll finally get to see him on Fri for his 8 month check up.

I was talking to a psychiatrist I work with and she immediately said ear tubes may be a good idea (she's a MD). Any opinions?

My son had tubs done around 1 yrs old (11yrs ago..lol) but we didn't jump the gun so soon. I would say it was about 3 months of back to back infections before we opted to have consult w ENT. My son was on 3-4 diff anti's also..after 10 days infection wld return few days later...then new meds..come back ect. ENT suggested tubes bc my sons ear cavity was not slanted enough for regular drainage so bacteria grew quicker for him.
Have a consult with ENT they will tell you if your cjold can benefit with having procedure done.

I agree, go to an ENT. I used to work for a pediatric ENT and they know how to get rid of ear infections way better than the regular ped. They will also be able to tell you at what point tubes may become a good idea, but I don't think they will put them in after one round of persistent ear infections. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm def not rushing anything...but I also don't want him to suffer more then he has to. And I don't want him on too many rounds of antibiotics. Does anyone have a recommendation for a ent in Nassau?

Logan had tubes after having an ear infection every month from 9 months old to 2years old. I wish someone had suggested them sooner. If the ear infections continue take him to an ENT. (I have someone wonderful who does the procedure of Cohens)

logan has been 10 months ear infection free, nothing more then a cold. I would have done it at one or one and a half if they suggested it.

Even a specialist will want to wait and see what te upcoming months bring, some kids do better all summer...not my son, but many others.

We had a major pattern of ear infections before seeing the ENT and tubes being an option, but it is one of the best things we did...we use Dr. Mendelsohn at ENT and allergy in Garden City...

My son had tubes placed in Nov. He was a year old. This was after pretty much back to back ear infections since Sept. Like your little guy when he got sick it went fit to his chest and ended up with bronchiolitis and neb. On top of that he is allergic to penicillin.

We took him to Garden City ENT and Allergy. We saw Dr. Block who is FANTASTIC! After a hearing test, he recommended tubes immediately because he was showing a hearing loss. Dr. Block is great with kids and parents. He knew how nervous I was and the level of care and concern he showed us was unbelievable.

Tubes were placed Wed before Thanksgiving. He was completely fine by 10 AM that morning. Haven't had an ear infection since. Best decision for us.

Retchweg was great too, but had to switch to Gordon because I needed a provider who does procedures at NSLIJ

Teething is related to ear infections because of the increased saliva and mucous from putting things in the mouth. It also is related to diaper rash too. DD usually had everything. We got tubes in her ears after the sixth because it was almost monthly! We went a few months without any infections but she developed one a few weeks ago... she was also cutting three teeth, one of which is a molar.
