Ear tubes? Anyone have experience?

If DS's fluid doesn't clear up within a month, he will likely have to get tubes put in his ears.....

Please tell me it's not a big deal if it happens, I'm praying he doesn't need them, just trying to forget about it until our next appt......Chat Icon

Re: Ear tubes? Anyone have experience?

DS had tubes put in. It really was pretty painful for him and me. It was difficult to watch them put him to sleep since he was crying and fighting the mask, but then the whole procedure was only 15 min, and they called me back to recovery. I did feel bad because he was so out of it when he woke up that he was crying for a LONG time and would not be comforted, but eventually he calmed down. When he woke up from his nap after we got home, it was like nothing happened.

Re: Ear tubes? Anyone have experience?

Let me tell you that my 30 year old brother just had tubes put in his ears for the 3 or 4th time in his life. He has had chronic ear issues. They did it awake at a regular offfice visit(at the ENT) and it took 2 seconds. they told him the only reason they even put kids to sleep is because the need to be very still so they do not damage the ear drum. That being said, having your baby put to sleep is scary, I've been there, but you will be fine and so will your babyChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD had it done this past August - she was 20 months at the time. She was fine. They gave her a little drink and it made her loopy. Then they brought her in (DH went I couldn't). It was less than 15 minutes and we were in recovery.

She woke up a bit cranky, I think because she was scared and didn't know where she was or what was going on. She cried until we got into the car and then she was fine. By the time we got home she was playing and having fun as if nothing happened.

Re: Ear tubes? Anyone have experience?

Troy JUST had tubes put in on Feb 2. I had reservations about doing it, but am SO happy we did it. If you search my S/N you'll see a long post about my concerns.

Troy did not go one month w/o an ear infection since August. We knew this was the best thing for him.

The procedure itself is so quick, it's not even funny. If you want more info, advice, anything, feel free to FM me!!

Trust me, I know it's not an easy decision by any means, but we are so glad we decided to do it.

Re: Ear tubes? Anyone have experience?

DS is getting them on Friday. He's had at least one ear infection every month all winter and one now that won't clear up at all for the last 4 weeks. The doc said it would be less than 10 min on each ear. The worst part is going to be that he can't eat or drink fromt he night before and he's gonna be screaming for his milk and nanas in the morning. It's a very common procedure and I talked to lots of people who have had it whose kids have had it and there really is nothing to worry about. The worst part is just going to be for you to watch them put him out if he's upset or when he's groggy waking up...but that's a very short period and he'll be fine short time later.
