Double ear infection- 3rd antibiotic
Hi all! My 2.5 yo just left the pediatrician with his 3rd type of antibiotic for a double ear infection from Christmas morning.
Had anyone had to give 3 straight types of antibiotics? What will this do to his system? I'm so nervous but these ears really need to clear up! His last ear infection was exactly a year ago.
He's going to start Zithromax. Never taken this before, has anyone else given this to their kids and what were the side effects like?

Re: Double ear infection- 3rd antibiotic
DS1 got a ton of them from 1 - 3 in the fall and winter time. They cleared up after antibiotics though. The Ped said if they didn't clear then he'd consider tubes. Never heard of that antibiotic, but the best one that worked for DS was surpress. I think that's the name.

Keep DC hydrated and try probiotics and yogurt to keep the system balanced.

DD has taken Zithromax a few times for ear infections, as she is allergic to penicillin drugs. I never saw any side effects from it.

Yes DS has been on three different antibiotics... each stronger... The last antibiotic was a three day intramuscular shot. Very strong...
Granted my DS is younger than yours... however from all the antibiotics he got c-diff. on veterans day we put tubes in - I posted a couple of questions around this topic. Haven't looked back since and thank god we are doing much better.
Maybe go see an ENT and let them take a look... thats what we did.

Double ear infection- 3rd antibiotic
This has been happening to my ds a lot. He has had 3 ear infections in the last 2-3 months. The pediatrician I work with said to feed him a lot of yogurt and gave me a box of samples of culturelle to mix in with his applesauce.

Re: Double ear infection- 3rd antibiotic
My dd had an ear infection so bad that the Antibiotics did nothing after 3 rounds, My dr, gave my DD very strong Shot of antibiotic. They give them up to 3 days in a row. After the second shot it was completly cleared up. Ill never forget how bad I felt she had such a rough 2 months trying to get rid of a double ear infection!

Our friends son used zithromax and it cleared them right up.
DS 2 just finished his second RX from a double ear infection 10 days before Christmas. 3 antibiotics in 2 weeks seems like a lot - how long were the doses for? Maybe they weren't prescribing the previous ones for long enough?

Did you try cefdinir? That is the antibiotic our ped suggested that nipped a resistant infection in the bud for us.

WOW thanks everyone!!
He has an ENT (seeing him tomorrow) and didn't feel he was a canidate for tubes last time we saw him. We'll see what he says tomorrow. Last ear infection was exactly a year ago but since this one is hard to get rid of we'll wait to see what he says. Ped said that if the zithromax doesn't do it he'll need the shot.
Thank you for all the suggestions, I'll make sure he has at least a yogurt a day and plenty of fluids.
