When to ditch the paci?

Ds is 9 months and only uses the paci for naps and night time although I think he would have that thing in all day if I let him.

What's the best age to get rid of it? Dd sucks her thumb and I am afraid if I get rid of it he will start sucking his thumb.

We had to get rid of it when DS was 2. He liked to teethe on it so he would tuck the bottom of it behind his bottom teeth and chew on the top. Eventually he started to chew through them so we had to get rid of them cold turkey. It was one horrible day and then he was fine. I think it was harder on me because I knew how much he loved his "B" as he called it!

I would say the sooner the better. DS is 2 yrs 8 months and still needs the paci to sleep at night. We just recently mastered him not needing it during the day. It is going to be so difficult to wean him off of it, he won't even go upstairs until he runs into the kitchen and points to where he knows we hide it on the counter. My 9 month old only used a paci until he was 6 months and then lost interest, but never turned to his thumb.

ITA. Sooner the better. We took ours away at 7.5 mo b/c they kept waking for it and couldn't find it themselves. They don't miss it and don't suck their thumbs.

we JUST finally got rid of it with my son at 3 years 7 months...

DD is almost 1 and the sooner the better! She is not as attached as he was though.

I'm enduring this agony right now. Do it sooner rather than later. DS is 2 years 4 months and it is torture trying to wean him. I knew that if I tossed it cold turkey it would be painful to ME having to listen to him scream his stubborn head off so I just cut the nipple. Now, it's barely a nub on the plastic and he has manipulated the plastic to suck on that. But he doesn't ask for it as much so that's good. He was only a binkie kid for naps, night and in the car.

DS kept using to them to teethe (he was a little over two at the time) Once he chewed through the last one, We went outside, told him it was time to say goodbye to his "plug" and made him throw it in the garbage. He never asked for it since. I was so so shocked that actually worked!

My son was addicted but at 2 years and 2 months I just took it away. It wasn't nearly as crazy as I expected. After a few days he never asked for it again. Tbh after 2 I kind of started to feel embarrassed. I feel like every day someone would make a comment about it.

You'll get all different answers, but the sooner the better, IMO. We just got rid of DD's at 18 months, but she was only using it for naps and bedtime for the past several months. Over the summer, it was just for car trips and sleep, then just sleep, then gone. I cut a hole in the tip, and made it bigger each day, but she just kept sucking on it, so eventually put her down for a nap when she was very tired, and she fell asleep without it. After that, I made a big deal, and had her help me throw a few in the garbage. She understood, and has been okay without it.

I stopped DD around 15 months. Not purposely tho. We literally ran out of them. Once the last one was gone/lost I decided not to replace them. She did great! I was really surprised. Even at bed time. I agree with the PP the soon the better. Good luck!

Maybe feb break so my parents/babysitter do not have to deal with it.

we got rid of it at 8 months cold turkey. dd was going through a screaming phase at that time so i really couldve used it longer (to plug her lol) but she seemed to be ok without it.

6 months, he barely even noticed it was gone. One rough night and that was it. And he's not a thumb sucker either, he developed a rather hilarious self soothing technique of laying on his stomach and kicking until he falls asleep. You can hear him nod off, the kicking slows down, then stops, then goes for a sec, then he's out.

We also introduced a lovey when we lost the paci. It lives in the crib and does not come out.

At 12 mos. it is just for sleep. She even spits it out now if we give it to her when she's ultra cranky! So I'm following her lead! I hope to have it gone completely in the next few months.
