How to ditch the Paci & bottle..

So my DD Is going to be 20 months old .
Dr suggest to get rid of the paci at 1 but that did not happen and reason for that is we went away a few months after her bday and the DR said to give her the paci while flying it will help with her ears.. Now we are here today because i never took it away. I have stopped giving it to her during the day and she really only gets it at night to sleep...

how did you get rid of the paci????

Now on to the bottle-- Dr also suggest to stop the bottle at 18 months. DD will NOT drink her milk out of anything else but the bottle...

how did you get your DC off the bottle?

I am of no help with the paci bc JJ just stopped cold turkey the day we brought Nicholas home & he saw his baby brother using one.

In terms of the bottle, I started him around 9 months & would give him a sippy with water or juice whenever he was in the highchair to familiarize him with it. Then once he hit 1, I started to give him the cup with his afternoon milk in it & at first he was not happy. When he realized I was not going to switch it back to the bottle, he drank it & the rest was history. Within 2 days, we were at all cups

DD just started drinking milk from sippy cup, she is 18 months.. we found the NUBY one & the sucky part is kinda soft like a bottle nipple... she has had no problem with it. I did not try 100 sippy cups before but I did try a few and they never worked ( plus I wanted her to drink her milk, I sometimes still think she survives on milk like when she was a baby baby, I know people say after a few days they will take the cup otherwise no milk, I just didnt feel that strong about getting rid of bottle) with that said, it took a few days for her to drink the whole cup when usually she downs her bottles... but bye bye bottles!
I also think even at 20 months, they are babies and we are told to rush all these things away from them :(
I think I wasnt ready for DD to give the bottle up either!!

And the paci, DD only takes at night and I am in the same boat as you.. not looking to take it away from her just yet.

Can't help with the paci because DD doesn't use one.
As far as the bottle, we went cold turkey around 13 months. I put the milk in a straw sippy and handed it to her. She threw the cup back at me and refused to drink it. She took mabey one or two sips from it. After two three days she realized if she wanted milk she had to drink if from the straw cup. It worked.

No exp with paci so Im no help...
but as for bottle, G was off at 15mths.

I transitioned as well with the Nuby, the soft nipple looking one, added milk and within 3 days she was off.
Def recommend the Nuby.

I also have a child WHO loves milk so IDK if it was just easier..due to that too.

DD was not attached to her bottles so I can't help you with that, but as far as the pacifiers, DD is 2 1/2 (3 in august). She only gets them for naps/bed or when we are in the car. I don't want to take them fully away from her yet bc they are so soothing to her.

We have been discussing with her that when she gets a big girl bed this spring, we are going to give her mimi's to another baby who needs them. "Some babies are sad that they don;t have any mimi's and it would be very nice for us to give ours. We are going to put them in the mailbox, then the mailman is going to come and take them and leave you a present!" Thats our speech to her about it.

I will see how well it goes when it comes down to it!

I am a mean mommy - when it was time to get rid of the paci and bottle I just took them away. The paci was gone by 5 months, that's when we did CIO, so that was easy. Same with bottles. I got rid of one bottle every few days till they were totally gone. It never became an issue, maybe DS just wasn't attached to them? DD doesn't seem to care about them either. Can you take them away slowly? If she's thirsty, she'll drink eventually

Cant help w/ the paci, but w/ the bottle I am going to give the Nuby a try. If that does not work I am going to stop cold turkey. I'm sure she will do fine after a few days. Just reward her with some crayons & markers

Got rid of the bottle at 18 months. I thought it would be a nightmare, but it went better than I thought. I put his milk in a sippy one morning b4 daycare (when DH was away b/c he doesn't like change) LOL!
At first he was hesitant. We sat and watched Nick Jr and he finally drank it. I kept saying... "you want your Milk" over and over. He finally got it that milk is in there. After that he never looked back and only drinks milk from any sippy cup
Now... the paci. Nope, 19.5 months and still has to have it to sleep. I wanted to give it up sooner, but between colds, ear infections, molars coming in, etc... it's what got us through the tough times. I limit it to nap and night time. I do cave when he's cranky

I need this help too. Ds still takes 1 bottles at night time, but uses cups during the day. He also uses the paci for going to bed, he would have it in his mouth all the time if we let him. But our rule in the paci must stay in the crib.

I always say I am goignt o take the paci away and then he gets more teeth and the paci soothes him.

I took paci away from DS 1 @ 6 months, and just took DS 2 Paci away @ 7.5 months nice and early so they can't ask me for it.

bottle whole other issue. my DS is now 27 months and still has a morning, nap or a night bottle. he will drink out of a sippie but just a few OZ . not sure what to do, he is very stubborn and seems like he can't wind down w/ out it. I think my doc would be pizzed if she knew he still had the bottle

DS is 22 months and we just stopped all bottles except nighttime. He also will not drink milk from a sippy but he does drink from a regular cup so I make sure to sit with him during meals and make sure he gets what he needs.

I think you may need to go cold turkey and just supplement the calcium with other food sources if he refuses the cup. I have no advice for the paci, he never took one. Good luck! ps I never told my dr. he was still on the bottle because I know what he would have said

I didn't do it that young because my DD was SO SO SO attached to both her bottle and her paci.

I tackled the bottle first.. when she turned 2. I started a few months before, probably at the same age as your DD is now. I played around with the number of ounces I gave her a day so that she was only taking 2 bottles, morning and night. After a few months of trying to get her to drink milk from a sippy I managed (somehow, I don't know, it was a miracle) to just NOT give her the nighttime bottle for a week or so. When she asked for it again, I told her she could only have milk if she took it from a sippy cup. And that's how it happened.

The paci didn't happen until 2.5. Again, I started a few months before and made certain rules - no paci in the house, only for the car and only for bedtime. And then I'd forget it when we were in the car. And then cold turkey one very painful night in September.

My DS only uses the Paci (Wubbanub) at night so I am no help on that...

But as for the bottle, I slowly transitioned...for example, if he had 4 bottles per day, I replaced 1 bottle with a sippy, then a week later, 2 bottles with a sippy and so on, until he was completely off the bottles.

DS was having his nighttime bottle until 18 1/2 months. One day I asked him if he wanted his cup with milk at night and he said cup so I gave it to him and never went back to the bottle. Now the paci, I have no advice on because DS still takes it at night or for nap or if he is teething badly. He was a late teether so is still getting some teeth. DS is 19 months now.

I can't help with a bottle b/c DS was BF and went right to sippy cups for milk. As far as the paci, I asked at his 12mo appt. and the doc said if he's only using it in the crib (which is the case MOST of the time) then don't worry and let him have it. I'll probably stop it cold turkey when summer comes around and I don't have to worry about sleep/work. He'll be about 20 months.
