Spit Up/Reflux

DD was diagnosed with a Milk allergy and reflux. We were on nutramigen and axid. This morning she "spit up" 4 times after her bottle of nutramigen- it was a decent amount and she was very bothered by it. We switched her to Neocate this afternoon (still has blood in her stool) and she has spit up 2x after each of those bottles. She sounds like she is gasping/choking and then she cries. Is this normal for spit up?? DD is 5 weeks.

Re: Spit Up/Reflux

how long has she been on the meds? my son wasnt totally better until almost 2 weeks on the reflux meds. he was also on nutramagin & it worked well for us

despite the meds & special formula there were some occasions where he spit up more than normal but it was maybe once or twice a week

Spitting up is totally normal and can last for many more months to come. Babies have immature digestive tracts and have to grow out of spitting up.

The discomfort, however, is not normal. You might want to talk to your GI about trying a different med. Zantac worked well for DS.

I have a call into the ped who is on call for my ped. She is continuing to scream, cry and writh in pain after bottles. Then she spits up/vomits and chokes, gasps and cries. She sounds all stuffy now too, so I think it's going up her nose.

Re: Spit Up/Reflux

Aww poor thing. :( I know how terrible it is to be trying everything in your power and it still not work. It sounds like reflux.

She might need Zantac. You should see a gastro specialist if you haven't already

You can also try laying her more upright and on her right side after meals. The stomach empties on the right and aids digestion.

Eta- we also did 0.15 ml of maalox 3x per day, gas drops with each bottle and acid 3x per day. She finally outgrew it and was off it all at 5.5 mo. She never needed Zantac bc she wasn't colick (per gastro) but she did spit up entire bottles and out if her nose which bothered her. Them she would do the gasping thing. :(
