Spit-up/Reflux?

I am not sure what is going on with the babies. I am going to call the dr. tomorrow but figured I would ask the experts here first!

The last 2 days, the babies are spitting up after every bottle. Within the hour after eating they spit up. Not a lot, but enough that I have to change them etc. They don't seem to be in pain, it just comes right out.

They are on similac advance and have been for a few weeks now with no problem. Any ideas on what is going on or suggestions to help them? I keep them sitting up at least 30-45 minutes after every bottle and it happens while they are sitting up.

are they crying or in discomfort with the spit up?? that would be a sign of reflux... spit up would just be spit and go about their merry way..

DS had reflux and it was awful, but he would spit up, up to 2-3 hrs after..

Spit up is normal, but I will suggest a formula change for a few reasons. I would suggest switching to enfamil gentlease for these reasons:

It has partially broken down proteins, and reduced lactose - this helps with gas and fussiness and I have found it helps with spit up too. The benefit of this product over any other is that it by keeping lactose in the product it keeps the enzyme lactase working in the gut. The partially hydrolyzed proteins make digestion easier so there is improved gastric emptying.

It is also similar to breastmilk with a whey to caesin ratio and the recommended levels of DHA, unlike any similac product. Sim products are mostly caesin which is the hard curd of milk, usually causing constipation. They are also the only formula out there that doesn't meet recommendation of DHA.

Enfamil also has a helping hands program that sends out a free case to moms to sample. (I am a ped. dietitian if you are wondering why I know about this).

There is another product called AR that has added rice starch - but I would start with gentlease first. I have seen a lot more success with it.

We are going through similar with DS who is 3 months old. He has been on the same formula since he was 1 month & NEVER spit up. The Ped put DS on Zantac last week & we did see a difference in the "crying during burping" but he was throwing up & had a lot of gas. They told us to take him off of it & give his system a couple of days. I go back for his 3 month checkup tomorrow & the Ped is suppose to put him on something better like Axid or Prevacid. DS still spits up some after feedings but like your children, is not in discomfort when he does it. He actually laughs

I can't speak about the nutritional values of different formulas and that's something to consider. Just wanted to add that my DS was on Similac Advanced and after 2 weeks his tummy couldn't handle it. We were switched to Enfamil Gentlease and it was horrible. He started spitting up constantly, it was like a fountain. It would happen quite frequently even hours after he ate. We were then switched to Similac Alimentum and almost a week later, the spitting up basically stopped. Given the previous post, I may look into changing his formula in the future once his tummy issues resolve but for now both his pediatrician and GI doc want him on Alimentum (he doesn't have a milk allergy, supposedly just sensitivity - i think he has mild reflux, GI has us giving him Zantac)

Sounds liek normal reflux to me...Maybe just a bit excessive but unless they were eating less or grunting, I would do nothing. Noah was like that and eventually outgrew it, after a brief period on Zantac...Now Sydney is like that occasionally but it doesnt seem to cause her any issues yet.
