let me start off by saying i am not having a good say so perhaps that is why i am letting this annoy me so much, but long story short i am now considering changing pediatricians...and need to know if it is justified or not...
dd was scheduled for her 2nd dose of the flu shot (she is 10 months old). i was told it needed to be 4 weeks after the first dose. the drs office called that they need to reschedule mondays appt bc the dr has an emergency - i say that i am willing to see any pediatrician in the group that morning and they tell me no, they are booked (mind you its just a shot - not a check up). i ask for a weekend appt and they tell me they dont do shots on the weekend. they then offer me mid day later in the week, i explain that i work and cannot take a mid day appt. so the next thing they offered me was January 14th for a morning appt that worked for me - that is 8 weeks after her first dose. i just read on the cdc website that they should be 28 days apart and that it is not really effective until 2 weeks after the 2nd dose. should they have accommodated me and squeezed me in since they are canceling on me, or is this just how doctors offices work these days???
after we made the appt for the 14th of January, i realized i was off NYE so i made a mid day appt to take dd so it will only be one week late
eta - this is the second issue i had with them, i had an appt for dds ears to get pierced and showed up and they had no record of the appt. they did end up seeing me though - they had me wait about 20 minutes and they had another doctor do it which i didnt care about.

IMO i think they should of had her come in anyway especially since it was just a shot and that there was other doctors that could have seen her...haven't them that far apart is almost like not getting the shots in the first place.
Edited for this....if that was me i would be looking for a new doctor

They should have given you an appointment. Having you wait 8 weeks is unacceptable in my opinion. The follow up shot appointment takes like, what, 30 seconds? Of course emergencies happen for doctors, and for all of us, but they have been more accommodating.

Wow, I'm surprised they couldn't squeeze you in for the flu shot. It takes like, what? 2 minutes? Plus, in many offices the PA can do it and it doesn't even require the Dr. I assume you did, but did you tell them it was just for the flu shot? Most offices are so vigilant and adamant that you come in for the shot, so I'm actually really shocked she is putting you off a month!
I'd seriously consider switching peds if this is how they operate for a simple vaccination.

I agree with everyone- they should have fit you in. They were the ones who canceled on you (for justified reason, but still, that's on them), so if they get behind on their other appointments by 5 minutes, then so be it. I think you are justified in being annoyed.

unacceptable. 8 weeks is way too long. i would first call them back and give them shit. secondly, i would look around for a new ped.

I have had issues in my ped's office with the people at the front desk regarding shots - they don't seem to know protocol. DS 2 had a well visit and I called to ask if I could bring DS 1 in for his flu shot and the response was we only do them on Monday and Thursday. They spoke with a Dr and it wasn't an issue.

unacceptable. What would happen if your daughter was sick and she needed to see the doctor. Would they tell you that they could see you in 2 weeks?

the receptionist (or whoever he was) put me on hold and asked someone if it was ok to wait 8 weeks...and came back saying waiting that long was fine! that annoys me even more since the cdc says they should be given 4 weeks apart (i didnt have that info when i was on the phone with them). i will mention it to the doctor when i see her though bc i am curious what she thinks about this.

they will squeeze you in for sick visits but it is at their convenience. so i could end up with a noon sick visit that i would have to take or leave...which if dd was sick i would deal with the squeeze in time. its bc i wanted a certain time (before 9am) that they were making me wait until January 14th. i could have gone in around noon 3 days later, but i need to go to work

Re: pediatrician wwyd
i just want to say I went thorugh the same thing today.
I went in for dd's 9 month appt and was supoosed to do the booster for flu. got the first 1 month ago. They are out of them don't know when they will get them in a nd are going to call me when they come in.
I aid I was told that it HAD to be done within 28-30 days. The dr said it's fine, just like any other shot, it SHOULD be done but can wait.
What if they don't get them in, then I gave her 1/2 shot for nothing.
I was very annoyed today. Not switching dr b/c i've no other issues but wanted to share mine too

Re: pediatrician wwyd
why can't a nurse or PA give a vaccine (if you have one in the practice). For a vaccine that takes 2 minutes, they should have fit you in the SAME day.

My coworker had this issue during the flu shot shortage a few years back. They said that two doses are ideal but, one is better than nothing if the second dose isn't available.

Honestly, I didn't see you write "OMG I so love this pediatrician and I feel terrible leaving..." It sounds like you're annoyed enough to leave and not so attached and in love that you can't do so. I'd be out of there too!

Because when they are under a year the dr must see them and check to make sure they are healthy. Standard protocol.

I think they should have accommodated you, especially since its flu season now. If they make you wait until mid January, and then the shot isn't fully effective for 2 more weeks, by then its already February. The shot only takes a minute to give so they should have squeezed you in ASAP.
