4 month old and falling asleep
My DD is just 4 months. I have put her in her crib or RNP and she has fallen alseep on her own but this is not consistent and not the norm. More often then not I have to rock/pat her to sleep still.
Most of the time if I lay her down in her crib she will not fall asleep on her own. She will stay in their happily for a little while but then after a bit she will start to fuss/cry. I end up going in and then rocking/patting her to sleep. (On occassion if I give her the pacifer she will then fall asleep without rocking her) I keep hearing and reading that she needs to learn to self soothe and that if you continue to rock a baby to sleep they become dependent on this. I get that but how do I get her to fall asleep on her own without letting her CIO? I don't know if thats a method I want to use and also I feel like she is still a bit young for that anyway.
Anyone have any suggestions or feedback?

Re: 4 month old and falling asleep
At 4 months I'd do what you have to do. At that age DS had no problems putting himself to sleep, but now at 10.5 months he needs me in the room to go to sleep (separation anxiety). So my point is, it'll change a million times. You can always try CIO when you are ready, but it doesn't sound like you are quite there.

Yes I am definitetly not ready for her to CIO. Thanks I just don't want to create bad habits with her sleep because I'm not emotionally ready to let her CIO lol.

IMO most 4 month old's are not ready to self soothe. Do what works for her and for old. I believe, developmentally, you cannot form "bad habits" that young

at 4 months old i would help her sleep, pat her, rock her, whatever it takes i did CIO, but IMO 4 months is too young for them to self soothe

At what point did you start CIO?

Re: 4 month old and falling asleep
I think 4 mos. is too young as well.
Dd always fell asleep on her own but there was sleep regression at 9 mos. At that point, we CIO (one night only was needed!). I'd say anything younger than 6-8 months is too young...

Re: 4 month old and falling asleep
My DD will be 4 months old this month and for her all she needs is her pacifier to fall asleep. Every now and then she gets a little bit fussy and all I do is go back in her room and hold her pacifier in her mouth. I only do this if she is fussy and not screaming and sometimes that works. If she is screaming which I have to say isn't often, then I pick her up and calm her, but the second she calms down I put her back in the crib. I've learned with her that routine is key! Whatever you introduce to them they will latch onto and that is what will comfort them! So if your DD is comforted by being rocked and you don't want to have her CIO ( which I agree with you on this) then try and introduce a new way to comfort her. Maybe like my DD she will be ok if she just sees you while she is laying in the crib and you can try giving her the pacifier and just talk to her. This is just my opinion and after having my DD scream from gas issues for the first couple of months I am all about doing whatever works for YOU and HER! I hope you find something that works!

Sounds like we had the same baby for the first few months lol my DD had the same gas issues. Thank you for you reply I actually laid her down last night awake around 8pm. I put the pacifer in her month rubbed her belly a little and left the room. She fell asleep on her own with in minutes. I was shocked! She woke up once during the night. I went in to her room gave her the pacifer and patted her a little and then left and she fell asleep until about 6 this morning. Not to bad lol!

So sorry to hear your baby suffered / suffers from gas to. Our DD has a milk protein allergy so she is on Alimentum, which has been amazing! The way you put her to sleep last night is exactly what I do. Hope she continues on this new path, Good luck!

Re: 4 month old and falling asleep
I hear you, it's really really hard. My baby is the same age, 4 months, and I just got him to fall asleep now finally... he was screaming, so upset, I held his hand, said SHHH over and over, and rocked his stroller back and forth for the longest time (He sleeps in his car seat in his stroller because of reflux). Hopefully he will stay asleep. I don't want to set up bad habits either, but when he's screaming like that, I feel bad letting him scream.... but sometimes it happens because there are times when he's so upset and absolutely nothing calms him down no matter what I try. I don't know the solution either but you're not alone!

I'm sorry to hear about the reflux...my DD had such severe gas the first 3 months and she would scream and cry...because of this I felt the same as you...I just didn't feel comfortable letting her cry because I knew she was in pain. I think until the reflux resolves you just do what you have to do to make him comfortable and get to sleep. Hang in there
