Waking up miserable from naps
For the last week or two DD has been so upset when she wakes from her nap. She used to always wake up so happy. I let her fuss for a few minutes before I go in the get her but then she doesn't even want me to pick her up and just tosses herself around the crib crying. When I finally get her up she doesn't want me to cuddle her or anything and just cries and cries. She's very verbal and fully capable of telling me if she wants or needs something but she won't say anything. Sometimes it's 10 or 15 minutes before I can distract her and then she'll calm down and be okay. Is this normal? She's 19 months but I feel like I'm dealing with a hormonal 14 year old who just needs to cry for no reason! Has anyone else been through this?

We have definitely gone through that from time to time. No rhyme or reason. It has definitely gotten better as DS grows older.

Re: Waking up miserable from naps
We went through this with ds. Sometimes the tantrum would last 45 mins . Luckily it stopped after a couple of weeks.

Re: Waking up miserable from naps
My 2nd ds was like that. Still now at 4 he occasionally will nap and wakes up like a tyrant from time to time. Hopefully for you it is a short phase. I found it was best not to talk to him and let him come around.

DD will sometimes wake up like that when she is still tired. Is she napping long enough?

Re: Waking up miserable from naps
I agree that my DD is like that when she prematurely woke from her nap and she actually needed more sleep time. I say let her be or try to just hold her and see if she'll fall back asleep. Otherwise, yeah, it takes some time but then they snap out of their mood. My mom said I was always like that as a kid and now my DD is doing the same thing!

Hannah does this. I think she wakes too soon and is tired b/c when she takes a really long nap she wakes up and plays by herself. I usually just give them a snack to distract. Plus they go longer btwn meals in the afternoon so I usually give a snack. I figure maybe they wake up hungry too.

Re: Waking up miserable from naps
Thanks everyone. Yesterday she napped for almost 3 hours so I don't thinnk that it's bc she's tired. She's definitely has had that crabbiness they get when they wake too soon and this just seems like more than that.
She won't usually take a snack right after she wakes up and definitely not when she's in one of these moods. Sunday we tried calling grandma to distract her and she just buried herself in my shoulder and wouldn't make a peep. When I first got her to stop crying and asked her what she needed, she actually told me she wanted to kiss the boys. Ummm, what!? I sometimes wonder if she's just upset bc she wakes up around 4 and realizes she's most likely stuck at home the rest of the day and is upset about that. Or it may just be general toddler moodiness. Uggh, I just hope it's a phase that doesn't last much longer.

My son is the same way, we have 20-30 minutes of post nap cranky. I'm not exactly the happiest person when waking up, so I figure he's just taking after me!
