Honestly,I think everyone reads to their child - I mean, have you ever really met anyone that says they don't?
That said - I think whether or not books are a good gift is an entirely separate question. I know personally, we have hundreds of books - more books than we could ever read honestly. Both grandmothers are former teachers, combine that with me getting books from almost everyone that attended my baby shower, the constant scholastic orders, book fairs etc. etc. we are BOOKED out LOL!!! Almost any time we are given books as a present (which is rare honestly) we already have a few copies already! I also say this is the case from many of my friends. I would say you have to know who you are buying for whether books are a truly worthwhile present. And, trust me, for the previous poster that said they don't take up space - they sure do in my house!
I agree.........they take up SO much space. I can't even keep them all out at one time, I have to constantly rotate them out. My daughter has a bookshelf in her room and two book baskets, we have a bookshelf in the den, my DS has a bookshelf in his room, there are book baskets in my room and then the garage is filled to the brim.........at least three huge bookcases. Storage is totally a problem for my books, we have HUNDREDS.

DD is three and loves books, I love reading to her.. that being said, I don't LOVE getting books as presents. We're big library-goers and I love being able to get tons of books that are new to us there all the time. It's great that we have a big collection of books at home but they get old quickly with all the reading we do and I'd rather just go to the library.

dd is 13 months and I read to her incessantly, and I have basically for as long as I can remember. she loves it and loooves books.

Yes!! We love book gifts and love to give books. Books are like toys in our house.
Even if the parents aren't readers, at least the kids will have something to touch and 'read' on their own. And if it's there and their kid asks to read it, it'll be hard to say no.

We read constantly to our kids, but I agree that storage for all those books is an issue. I rotate them out and we throw out anything that gets ripped/stained right away. I regularly go through and pull out books to give away that my kids are too old for. I always said books are the best gift, but we really don't have anywhere else to store them.

I am definitely NOT a reader. Unless you count Twilight Saga.  But I do love books for my girls. They destroy books by chewing on them. Up til recently I couldn't read a book without them grabbing it from me and crying. The past few times they have been good though. They will still eat books so we keep them out of reach. They love looking at them so I let them look while supervising.

Just about every night. They have shelves and shelves of books and all love to read. My 3.5 yo and 1.5 yo have shorter attention spans. My 6 yo reads to me and I read to her. She is definitely the bookworm. It may be 15 minutes a night. Sometimes shorter. But at least 2 books a night for all 3.

Yes... Started to read to him when I was still pregnant.. I did a book shelf and books for my baby shower and it started off his library... He is now 4 and we have tons of books and I love reading to him still. We gave away a lot of his books that were still in good shape so we weren't overloaded with books... Of course he didn't always sit still for reading, but he still heard what I was reading while he was playing...

I've been reading to DD since she was a very young infant--even if she didn't seem interested at the time. Now at almost 3, she is a huge book lover. We go the library regularly and she loves getting new books. I'll often catch her "reading" (making up the stories) to herself and her dolls. I say it's a really healthy habit to foster and books are a great gift to give (and get). I like to give them, too.

I've read to him since birth. He loves being read to still at 6. For Hannukah I gave him books every night. He loves books about animals and magic tree house. Also books about knights.

Just want to add for babies or kids who grab books and don't enjoy being "read" to... When cai was little I would get books with a single picture on a page. Like animals or shapes, etc.
This was great because I was still reading to him, it was quick (no actual story), and the picture captured his interest. Plus it got him used to the concept of being read to without it taking too long!

We have read to both our boys since the day they were born. Part of our bedtime routine with each of them is to read 3-4 books before bed. They are both huge bookworms and I love it. I think reading to your children is so important. I love getting new books as gifts for them and we very often give books as gifts to others. Never thought anything of it.

every. single. night. He would not let a night pass without 2-3 books and I love it.
My 3.5 year old is a true bookwork! He "reads" to himself every single night after we leave the room as well 
He loves books! Any books!
Same here. I asked for a few books for Christmas and I bought some myself! I am getting tired of reading the same ones all the time so I need some fresh stories!

I'm overloaded with books. I have 3 older sisters and friends that have given me TONS of hand-me-down books, so books aren't on the top of my list to get as gifts .
