Ear Thermometers
Does anyone use an ear thermometer? Is there a brand you can recommend?

Re: Ear Thermometers
I don't use one because I was told they weren't very accurate. I bought the one that scans the forehead and I love it. I wished I had this early on.

Re: Ear Thermometers
We have this one. It's less expensive than the Braun and just as easy to use and accurate.

Us as well
I used a rectal one until he was a little over a year. Then started using this one.

Ear Thermometers
yes I use braun. When he was a baby I used the rectal but now I just use the ear one. I know it's not as exact but I think it's always close enough to tell where his fever is at.

Re: Ear Thermometers
We have the Braun and I think it's terrible.
I get a reading of 95-97 almost everytime.
We mainly use the Exergen scan one, and I'm not that thrilled with that one either. It's usually 1 degree lower than actual temp.

Ear Thermometers
nope hate them. We used under the arm until nearly two then to Exergen temporal. I have had to pick AJ up from daycare because the ear one said 102 in an ear. She had an ear infection but NO fever, as noted by the fact when I asked them to 'check the other ear' she was utterly normal. But due to that incorrect reading they wanted me to keep her home 24hrs from their call which was 2 days. I fought back and won. She wasn't 'sick' she had constant ear infections, but didn't 'suffer' with them.
I couldn't change their choice of thermometer, but they did start to double check both ears (twice) to be sure before calling it a fever. If you get it wrong in the ear, it can give really bad numbers.
exergen's issue or me is if you keep taking her temp (like I do) I have to remember it retains the heat and will add a degree.
I never.. EVER stuck anything up her butt. To my knowledge it was only ever done once to her (and I saw them do it) and she did NOT like it. Thankfully it was quick. Every time we took her to a pediatrician they did it over the head and it was fine by them so why would I put a stick her to butt to be 'sure' at home? Never had an issue with under the arm (just had to add a degree).

Same here! We actually got one for my shower and any time I have used it on any of my kids it was never accurate it was a differ t nber than the rectal (for baby) and oral (for older kids)

Re: Ear Thermometers
Never used them at home. They are the most unreliable for babies and toddlers. My son is 4 and because he can spike a high fever in a short time, I still use a rectal thermometer. He is use to it. I have a temporal one it it is always off by at least 2 degrees. I also have an infrared one and that is worse.
