Re: ear thermometers

That's all we used for years with both DC (and ourselves). It's what our Ped uses as well. It's "accurate enough". IMO, the important temps are low, normal, elevated, and high. As far as how to treat it, 99 is the same as 99.5. 101 is the same as 102.

It's pretty accurate for actual temp, but it's very accurate if you just need what range they are in.

Re: ear thermometers

For a 3 month old. I'd only use rectal.

Honestly, I find my ear thermometer to be inaccurate lately on my 15 month old. One time it will be 99 and the next 102!

Re: ear thermometers

thank you! Maybe i'll go buy a rectal. She doesn't feel warm to me but she got the penumococcal vaccine today and the information sheet the dr gave me said 1 in 3 will get a fever of 100.4 or higher as a reaction to the shot! I want to monitor it so I keep her home and give her tylenol if she develops a fever.

Re: ear thermometers

I never ever used rectal
Many reasons for that.

I used the under the arm when she was younger and then temporal when she got older.

The ear ones NEVER work for us. They are utterly unreliable. I picked up AJ from school for a 'fever' only to find out they had it on the wrong angle and she'd been running. Another 'fever' was actually an ear infection. One ear read 102 the other read 98. Almost always they read 99 for her. Means I had 1 degree before the call to go home.

This daycare uses the same temporal I do. And ya know what? I get less calls to take her home. But she has also reached the immunity age and gets sick much less often.

Ditto.
I don't trust anything but rectal at that age.

The ear ones are SO unreliable. Rectal is best when they're babies

Agreed. My Ped won't "accept" a non-rectal temp.. if you call them with a question, they want to know only the rectal temp

The ear ones never work for me.Chat Icon far from accurate in my opinion, esp at that age - Id use a rectal if you want an accurate temp.
