Coughing until they vomit

I am at my wits end.
DD has had a cold for the past 3 weeks.
No joke. Not sure if it's that she keeps getting a new cold or if it's just lingering
Sniffles, runny nose, congested etc
It hasn't really bothered her or slowed her down at all.
No fever. Acts totally normal.
The thing is, it has turned into a cough now. Only at night. Only when she lies down.
I am guessing post nasal drip. I have had it myself and it's awful.
She coughs herself awake and the worst part is she coughs so hard that she vomits.
3 times last night.
Nobody sleeps.
I am cleaning up vomit 3 times a night.
We give her benedryl to dry it up, zarbees for the cough. Nothing helps.
Anything else I can do?
She was at the ped for last week and he said her lungs are clear, and it's just post nasal drip.
And there isn't much you can give them at this age. She is 3.
Anyone else go through this?
What helps?

We use Vicks plug ins and a humidifier as well which seem to help a bit.

I hate the post nasal drip cough/vomiting. Even if DS 1 doesn't cough a lot, the mucus makes him vomit. It's horrible.

Is it vomit or just mucus that comes up? My oldest 4 gets that from post nasal drip. He will cough until the mucus comes out & only at night. We find that once he gags the mucus up, he's fine, usually only the first or 2nd night.

We give benadryl d which helps with his post nasal along with Delsym. We also use 2 pillows to elevate him, vicks plug ins, vicks on toes & chest plus humidifer.

In addition to everything you're doing, maybe try elevating her mattress?

have you seen her pediatrician? DD just went through a virus that was causing the same symptoms. not that you can give hem much, like you said, but at least i knew what it was. i hope she feels better soon!

we are in the same boat with DD (10.5 months) but she isn't really vomiting, yet. Just coughing incesently for hours at night.

I have a humidifier PUMPING next to her crib with the vicks inserts. I may try the vicks on her feet tonight.

I do give her 2.5ml of zyrtec over Benadryl. Seems to do more for her.

My sister give her now 4 year old a cough medicine with codeine that works PERFECTLY. My mother said she had to do the same thing with one of my brothers around the same age.

Tis the season! DD has basically been sick since Sept. Thanks first winter in daycare!

i was going to suggest benedryl (but i saw you tried that) But keep that up

Do you have a nebulizer? I do that when it gets that bad

Use an extra pillow at night

This happened to us wtih DS a few times.

My DH finally thought of something- seems when he starts coughing, he gets a little nervous..
So dh immediatly sits with him and holds him and rubs his back and says calm down, you dont need to cough just calm down.

gives him a sip of water and he calms down and starts breathing normally.

that worked for us. also a humidifier- warm air.

It's probably just mucus. It doesn't smell like vomit and it's watery.

I keep saying it and I know it sounds strange but the doc suggested it and it works for us is Tylenol to reduce the irritation in her throat. But when all else fails. I slept with her on the couch her laying on my chest like baby days. Humidifier on us and all the rest applied. Sleep, comfy or not, is still better than no sleep at all for us. OH and lots of water before bed time (that first then the med cocktails).

I totally hate Post Nasal Drip..

I assume she's over 1...so try RAW honey. You can get it at Trader Joe's or Fairway for about $5-$6. Just make sure its RAW.

No joke my DD and I were sick for WEEKS, I tried a tbsp of raw honey before bed and then one in the morning and we were both cured within a day.

I am not usually one for these natural remedies but this one was a miracle worker!!

I 3rd the Tylenol/motrion it helps relieve the swelling so they can breath a little easier..
I also put some Vicks on her feet chest and under her nose. Also elevate her matters with towels under it.

I was also giving her Claritin but I recently switched to children's allegria. Seems to be helping her dry up a little.

Our ped suggested seeing an ENT if we didnt see any signs of improvement.
