what kinds of things do you keep in or near their crib so that they entertain themselves for that extra 20min-1 hour? nothing really seems to interest our daughter that is a quiet crib toy (like dolls, stuffed animals, teething rings, books, snack cup filled with cheerios, etc.)
I need some other ideas.

Nothing. Their wake up time is when he gets up. there would be nothing that could keep DS occupied. He is up and running when he wakes.

Re: For those who have kids that do the 5am-6:30am early wake-ups

how old is your LO?

dd is 9 months - she used to love watching her mobile when she was younger...now she likes to stand up and grab it. on a good morning, she will sit there for 40 minutes with it

eta - we also have books outside the crib. she loves trying to get them into her crib...one morning she actually managed to get one in there, but hasnt been able to since.

My youngest has always been an early riser & at 3.5 he still is. Nothing you can do to keep him in his room. I just get up & start the day

DS is 11 1/2 months; only thing that gets him back down is a quick nursing session. But some days he's up and there is no going back to sleep and no entertaining himself hin the crib.

Once DS wakes up within a few minutes he makes noise for us, and then he's up.

Yeah I get about 10 minutes of slowly waking up in the crib and that's it. I just get up early too.

My DS is 13 months and wakes up anytime between 5-6:30 am. He will usually entertain himself from a half hour to 45 minutes in the crib before he even makes a peep. We have a couple of toys (a rattle, his lovey, an a couple of stuffed animals) he plays with. But his favorite thing is his projection mobile. It plays for twenty minutes at a pop and hell just keep restarting it until he wants me. It's fisher price and by far my favorite investment!

DS wakes up early too, but goes down early so I don't let him fuss too much in the morning. If he wakes up still tired he will cry. Otherwise he will chill for a bit. Ijust resigned myself to waking up early LOL

You didnt mention how old your child was. My twin boys are now 2 but have been waking up at 6am for as long as I can remember. When they wake up, thats it.........PARTY TIME. (Ha ha with toothpicks in my eyes).
You can leave them in for few minutes until they really start whining......for me I just get them after about 5 or so min

My LO (14 mos) sits in her crib with a basket of her books for 30 min every morning while I shower (after I nurse her) - and on the weekends we try to stretch that time out as long as possible!

It depends on DDs age, but yes, it is ABSOLUTELY possible. Babies learn early on that certain behaviors receive a desirable response. This understanding matures with age. It also takes a while to learn and perfect. Cues can also help to master this skill.
How old is your DD?

DS is four and has always woken early. We bought a sun/moon clock that shows the moon at night and sun when he can leave his room. It's worked since he was 2 1/2. Sun is set for 7:30 so when he's up by six he can read or play with stuff animals until 7:30.

Same here for both of my boys.

We are up anywhere between 5:30am and 7:00am depending on the day. DS 1 doesn't nap anymore so he will sleep in if he can but, he usually gets up early when he hears the rest of us up.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

We have the Violet doll, stacking toys, sleep sheep, glow worm, fabric books.

Sometimes she plays, most times she does not.

DD is 18m. I think after Christmas I'm switching her to a big girl bed. That way she can get out of bed and play in her room.

Exactly the same for my DS. And by the way, I would kill for a 6am wake up call. That would be sleeping in Chat Icon

Re: For those who have kids that do the 5am-6:30am early wake-ups

I never put anything special in there - they pretty much babbled and entertained themselves - the only thing they had was a fisher price aquarium thing that played music/lit up - they learned to hit the button to turn it on .......

I personally would NOT put food in bed w/ them especially if you're hoping to keep them occupied while you sleep - but I'm paranoid about choking.

we just go in and play with them. there's no way they'd let us leave them alone in the crib.

There isn't one answer to your question. Finding the right methodology depends on where the child is cognitively and developmentally, what motivates the child, and patience and consistency on the part of the parent. You can FM me if you want to discuss it further. Since deciding to be a SAHM I miss this stuff. Chat Icon
