we took DS when he was almost 10 months, he was a lap infant. We brought a cosco scenera with us and gate checked it, and then just installed it in the rental car.
If you would like to ship the carseat, I know Walmart had 97 cents shipping when we bought the Cosco Scenera from there.

Terrible, isn't it? They say you should replace your carseats even if you were in a very minor car accident like a fender bender. Those seats are getting banged up even worse than that!
