16 MO and talking... Normal?
I was wondering if this is normal. Dd is 16 MO and she says a good amount of words but what I noticed is that the ones she said first are dropped from her vocabulary and then only the new word is used. Like she used to say diaper and now she won't but will say abbey or door. Is this normal and I'm just being paranoid

i dontknow if this is normal, but my ds does the same thing. He forgot how to say mama.. but says elmo, daddy, baba, milk, etc// he used to also say more and a few other words, but seems he forgot them.. who knows.. maybe hejust prefers to say elmo to mama.. LOL.. wish you good luck..

Thats funny cause DD used to say water, diaper and now Elmo is her favorite word to say!!

It was normal for my kids but it was considered highly verbal - at least by my pediatrician. My mom wrote a list of words my son said at 15 months. It was 50+ words - like lasagna, ladder, hat, call, uaru (the type of fish in our fish tank).
Just a word of caution. People may also mistake them for being older because of their verbal skills. A lot of times they don't always have the emotional maturity that goes along with the intellectual part so it can lead to more tantrums.
They all catch up eventually.
To keep him interested, we started reading. Having him point out things in the books & then we'd point out things & ask him what they were.

Yup, I think it's normal. My DD is doing the exact same thing. She has a repertoire of over 30 words/phrases, but she goes through phases with them. When she was under a year, she was saying her name, then stopped, then just started up again in the past few weeks. It's because they are trying to master new things, so the old ones take a back seat, but they are still in there.

My DD loves saying Elmo, but Minnie is her favorite. When I ask her "what's that?" everything is "a-Minnie," even when I know she knows the real answer.

DD used to answer Elmo every time we asked what something was. She's been very verbal from a pretty young age and at 18 months ays everything but she definitely has phases of favorites. I think when they get a good reaction from a new word or phrase it motivates them to continue using it a lot until it gets old and then they're on to something new. Lately, DD is constantly saying "Oh my gosh!" and it's adorable although I do my best not to react since I don't love her saying it. It's especially funny when she says it while she's changing her doll's diaper!
