Oh they do not babysit or watch my child without me or Dh home. This is just the latest of several concerning practices they have (including not seeing the need for baby gates at the top of their stairs, thinking I was frivolous for not taking a hand me down drop side crib). I hate to say this but they have no clue. Also this is my dad and step mom. They didn't raise me and they haven't been around an infant or toddler ever. I decided pretty quickly that they will NOT ever babysit alone. They really have no reason for even having a car seat but this is their latest thing they have gotten excited over . Well then don't bother fighting them but NEVER allow them to drive your DC. No way.

Thanks for all the responses. I have let them know several times, as well as sending them websites that state that carseats DO expire.
Today I get the following email from them:
"the car seat we have is 10 years old but you can't see how any of it has lost it's integrity or safety factors."
It's like I'm speaking another language. The next step is me putting my foot down
Not any ill-will towards you, but this wouldn't even be a discussion.
"Our child will not be riding in that car seat, we will buy one for you." And then promptly take a scissor to all of the straps. End of story.
I bet you if they call the car seat manufacturer they will tell them cut the straps
I like the idea - and the manufacturer will not only tell you to cut the straps they will also tell you the they will not warranty the safety of the seat.
Years ago, ILs had a used seat from a Thrift Shop, and stored it outside under an awning. I have no idea what their plans might have been for it, but I knew it was old, and being stored outside, so I just cut the straps without saying anything. Never heard anything about it from them, but at least I know it wasn't going to be used....

Re: Car seat expiration- pls help me convince grandparents
They are better off buying a NEW $40 car seat from Walmart. Is $40 not worth the ensured safety of their grandchild?? I'd put my foot down and tell them your child will not be going in that seat then go buy one for them to use to shut them up.

I'd just buy them one if they will ever be driving your child.
Agree with previous posters in that there are very inexpensive options out there.
