For those that have American Girl dolls..

I came on to post about these dolls and saw a post about it already lol. Which one do you have? My DDs are 1.5 and 3 yo. Would it be good to give them a doll this Christmas or should I wait until they are a little older. I know this might be a silly question but what makes these dolls different than the other dolls out there? What makes them special?

I think it all depends on our child. My girls are 6 and 3 and have 2 each and they don't even look at them. My 6yr old has Saige and my 3yr old has Marie Grace. They also have an American Girl Doll that they each picked out to their liking. Spend a fortune during my last trip there just to have them in their room doing nothing.

But I see a lot of girls here in the City who carry their dolls like a baby and you can tell that they love it.
I guess my girls are not really into dolls. I should just sale them.

Personally, I would hold off (unless you want to get the Bitty Babies). They are very expensive and I would say MOST little kids won't appreciate or take care of the dolls. Your little one won't even be able to change the clothes on it. The recommended age per AG is 8.

I waited until last Christmas when my girls were 7 and 5.5 to get them their first dolls. We had read some of the historical books and they liked Kit and Molly and so that's who we bought. They love them--and my oldest is not a "doll kid" either. This year I think I'm going to get Rebecca and Kaya (personally, I only want them to have the historical ones) because I know they care for them, etc.

For those that have American Girl dolls..

I would get the Bitty Baby or Bitty Twin (you can just buy one twin if you want). I've found these dolls hold up much nicer than all of the other brand dolls we have owned.

My 6 year old has 8 AG dolls, she loves them! Plays with them all the time. Reads them stories, plays school with them etc. They are her absolute fav! She has 4 babies and 4 of the "big girls".

I would start with a bitty baby. My DD loves to dress her dolls, and feeds them, takes care of them, sleeps with them, etc. I think it depends upon the child. There are other nice dolls out there for less but some of them can't have new clothing on them and for my DD that was really frustrating. I will say for us, once people know that you have a bitty baby or AG doll they don't give you additional dolls. Which for us is nice, because I don't want the clutter. My DD takes really good care of her toys. She likes to pretend and has a lot of fun with them. I think if you can get in on the sale price it is a good deal. My DD has a bitty baby, Marie Grace (purchased last year on sale for $50) and Rebecca (which was purchased by her grandparents when she was 2 months old.) We put that one away until this past weekend for her birthday. I don't plan on purchasing any more AG dolls but I will get her more accessories as she gets older.

For those that have American Girl dolls..

My DD got hers @ 5 and treats it like any other doll she has...its naked most of the time on her bed or on the floor. When she does play with her AG doll she is good..dresses her brushes her hair but when she is done she just leaves it & moves on.
I would save your $$ for now. Look into the Target Doll Generation something they are similar to the AG line.

IMO I would start off with a cheaper version (Target or TRU). My aunt bought her granddaughters the American Girl Dolls and one of them cut the hair and drew all over it with magic marker. If I had spent big bucks on that doll I would have been PEO'd.

Maybe wait til they are a little older for the American Girl ones.

For those that have American Girl dolls..

My DD is 4 and has a bitty baby. She rarely touches it, I think the only time she does touch it is to grab it from her little brother lol. Personally I would wait to they are 6 or so to appreciate them. Start with the less expensive versions.

My DD is 5 and I would not buy her one yet. She just doesn't take good enough care of her dolls.

For that age I would look at the bitty babies or bitty twins. I found they held up better than than other ones. They took a lot of love and abuse.

My daughter got one from Grandma at 6mo. Its still in the box in the closet. For that amount of money I feel bad having her throw it around like the other toys.
