Question about gel nails
I just got them done today for the first time. How do you keep them shiny? Do they dull out like regular polish? Is there anything I should avoid? I work in a hospital and we have alcohol hand rub, should probably avoid that right?

Re: Question about gel nails
Mine always stayed shiny. Unless you want patients to get sick for the sake of your nails I would not "avoid" the hand sanitizer.

The hand sanitizer is not necessary bc there is the option of using old fashion soap and water. It is optional, probably should have mentioned that

Question about gel nails
Sanitizer is totally fine with gel nails. Alcohol is the stuff they put on your nails when they are done to remove the sticky feeling and make it shiny. And your nails should stay shiny.
FYI...in my experience they never last 2 weeks.

Re: Question about gel nails
Every time I have been to a hospital I have seen them use both washing the hands with soap and water and then the sanitizer. I thought that was SOP at all hospitals.

Re: Question about gel nails
I wash my hands a ton of times during the day and my manicure lasts forever.
I just got mine done yesterday....the last time i had them done before that was July 24. And other than the fact that my nails had grown, they looked amazing. They didnt chip or dull at all.

Re: Question about gel nails
im the queen of hand sanitizer. i work in medical offices and have gel. nails still shine. just make sure your nail place uses a good quality gel. i used a groupon and the nail place apparently used a ghetto gel and when i went to anoher nail place to get my nails done, it took ONE HOUR of soaking and A LOT of filing to get the gel off.

Hand sanitizer is a good option for those walking in and out of the room with little to no contact with the patient, and really doesn't replace washing your hands. If you wash your hands before and after pt contact, there is no need to use the sanitizer. Believe me when I say that my intention is not to put anyone in harms way, and would take every action to make sure my hands are cleansed properly. I am probably the most anal person when it comes to washing my hands. I am just curious because the last time I had them done, they didn't last and I am trying to figure out why.
Thank you everyone for answering my question!

Re: Question about gel nails
You should be fine with the alcohol, shouldn't have to avoid it. Not sure what type of gel was used, but 99% isopropyl alcohol is used to remove the tacky layer after it cures. Cuticle oil can help keep them shiny and help the nail stay hydrated. Hand sanitizer can break down the gel with excessive use.

Thank you!! Didn't realize using cuticle oil would help. I am a big hand lotion user too, that is ok? The last time I had them done, they peeled within a day! I went to angel tips this time, hopefully they will last!

Do you know what kind of gel it was? The Brand and if it was a soak off gel or hard gel? If you use lotion or even the cuticle oil, after applying it you can just remove the residue from the nail plate. That's what I do.

Question about gel nails
Not sure. It was a white bottle with the color a band around the top of the bottle. I saw women with tin foil around their nails to take it off.........

Re: Question about gel nails
I also agree about the brand. I go to someones house who does them privately and she uses the shellac brand. My nails will last for weeks and grow out.
The one time I went to a salon they used electric drill to remove and used a no name brand and you could tell the difference. Did not last as long and my nails were so weak.

Question about gel nails
hmm. Just curious. I'm a nail technician and just like to see what brands people are using. If they were using tinfoil for removal it sounds like a soak off gel or gel polish. I use CND Shellac and always use cuticle oil and lotion, but remove it from the nail plate, and never had an issue.

There are two types of gel, Hard Gel (which you can build a nail extension, just like acyclic) and the soft gel, or gel polish (Like gelish or OPI GelColor) Although Shellac isn't a true gel its a hybrid, i love it! Its such a great product!!
If they were filing it off it that to me seems like they put a hard gel on.

Thank you so much for the info!! I never get my nails done, and have decided to start treating myself :0) they look so nice, and I want it to last! Will let you know the brand next time I go!

Question about gel nails
Here's another question: can they do the soft gel like a French manicure? I saw uv permanent gel on the list which was more expensive.......is that the hard gel?

A French can be done in gel polish. Yes the UV perm. gel is hard gel. It gets removed by being filed off.
