Need to hear both sides

Hailey took it immediately. We only use gumdrops. She doesnt like any other ones. I can count on 1 hand the times were she was so upset that a pacifier didnt work. Its an immediate thing for her as soon as it goes in her mouth shes fine.

None of my nieces or nephews ever used them so i really have no experience or opinions on breaking the habit... but at 6mos im not even close to worried about it yet

My son took it within the first hour he was born. He still uses it and he'll be 3 in September.

He was a colic baby and those pacifers were a life saver for ALL of us. Otherwise, there was just no calming him down.

He still uses the ones from the hospital - he never took to any others and he only wants the soft newborn ones. I tried moving him to the soothies 9 month old at that time, but he refused.

We're working on taking it away but honestly it doesn't concern me as much as having him potty trained by Septmeber for school.

I'm not worried about his teeth, the dentist said they are fine. If he needs braces he needs braces. Its a comfort thing for him. I know he isn't going to be a grown man walking around with it in his mouth. To each their own about when to take it away.

My first son took it without fail and loved it -
I liked it b/c I figured you can take that thing away, you can't cut off a finger, so I preferred it to sucking his thumb. -
After 6 months or so I didn't give it to him other than to soothe himself to sleep, never out of the house, etc.
He kept the damn thing until he was 3 (to sleep, calm himself down @ home, etc) but gave up the bottle no problem at 15 months.

My second was never ineterested in it and HE was the one I wished would take it b/c he had that weird wtiching hour where he just screamed his head off for no reason every night between 7:30 - 11 - but he never wanted it. Doesn't suck his thumb (thankfully) but still won't give up the bottle at a little over 2 years old (at night, again, to calm himself and chll like his brother used the paci for)

My opinion - go with whatever works for the baby and for you. Don't let anyone tell you what you should/shouldn't do - If you only want him to have it certain times/places - set that precedent early so he knows. If you don't care, then go w/ whatever......

ETA - they didn't give me one in the hospital, so I had the clear AVENT ones .....I liked them b/c they weren't so hugely obviouis, and he happend to take to it - so it was a win.

DD only likes the Nuk brand and still the 0-6 mos sized one. Doesn't like them any bigger. She is 2 and still uses for naps, sleep and when she needs soothing. Sometimes she just likes to have it other times. I have no issue with her using it still. Except when she won't take it out to talk , which BTW, her speech and vocabulary are off the charts.

DS used it for maybe 2 months. He never really liked it and we never really pushed it. I also never tried more than one kind of paci - I was not going to try a bunch of different brands to find one he liked. I figured it was to my advantage if he didn't really like them. He had the soothie one from NICU and Nuk brand.

The first two nights home DS didn't sleep and I was a mess. We gave him a paci and it made things so much better.

He's 2 and just gave them up. He was chewing through them so it was necessary. It was harder on me than it was on him because I was anticipating it being awful, but one rough day and he was ok.

ETA: He would only use the MAM pacis, so when he started chewing through them I got the gumdrop ones as a replacement. When he asked for his "B" I gave him the gumdrop one and he pushed it away. Eventually he stopped asking for it altogether.

I was never against pacis. I offered them to all 3.

Ds1 couldn't keep them in his mouth when he was small (he was a premie) and never took to them.
DD used hers till about 6 or 7 months when she started throwing them out of her crib. I thought it would be a great time to stop. Once we took them away she started sucking her thumb. Uhhh
DS2 is 5 months and has used the paci since birth. Recently he was waking up 5-6 times a night for the paci and I decided to take it away. We had one rough night but he is sleeping much better now and can easily put himself to sleep without it.

Since birth! Did I want my DC to use them? NO! With DS he was in the NICU and they gave it to him and he refused to give it up. With DD, I sent her to the nursery so I could shower and stuff and the nurses gave her one as well as a bottle when I requested no artificial nipples since I wanted to establish BF. All hell broke loose....

With DS it was the NUK and DD the smoothie. By 6 months they were both off of it.

Ds used the nuk since birth. I was afraid of him getting addicted and so started weaning by 4 months. by 6 months he didn't use it anymore.
it helped with crying and sleeping.
my biggest fear was how long he would use it and what it would do to his teeth. it did help with teething because we would dip in tea and cool it in the fridge.

i am one of those mom's who dislikes seeing a 2 year old, who walks and talks with a pacifier in their mouth. that was my biggest fear, but DS is great at adjusting so we didn't have that issue.

Neither of my girls would take one. I was glad with my first daughter. With my second I practically begged her to take it because she was a miserable infant.

DS#1 couldn't live without a pacifier.
DS#2 was never interested.

If your child takes, use it to soothe them.

I tried 8 different kinds and my dd hates them all. She sucks her ring and middle finger, I hate it but it soothes her so I admitted defeat. I wanted mine to use a paci as its easier to take away.
