Can anyone recommend a good protein bar or shake approved for a GD diet? I am desperate for good sources of protein for a snack.

I always eat the special K protein bars or fiber one 90 calories bar. I always pair with a string cheese for a little extra boost.

It's official......I have GD for the second time! Yay me!

I look forward to sharing/getting recipes from everyone!

ETA: I just found out about GD while I was away on vacation and I am waiting to hear back from the nutritionist to schedule my appointment. Last PG, i didn't take insulin. On the telephone, The doctor asked twice if I fasted the night before.....I hope the numbers are not an indicator that I might have to go on insulin.

I love the Nature Valley protein bars...but I don't have a rec for shakes. I do eat a lot of Oikos Vanilla Greek yogurt.

Little update....

I'm on Metformin but my morning numbers are even higher! They used to right within range. They are also making me test after 1 hour, and my numbers are still high even though I am eating predominantly the same food as before. I am bummed that I am having a hard time controlling it, but I am doing the best I can. Since they are now considering me a full-blown diabetic, even after the baby is born, I think it will be better controlled once I am not pregnant.

Tomorrow I have a DR appt., so we'll see what they say.

My biggest problem with this diet is that I am not having much variety.
I was advised to eat Special K with protein as a cereal and it hurts my stomach terribly!!!! So I went back to plain yogurt. I just don't know if I can eat plain yogurt every morning for another 4 weeks!!!
Any suggestions???

my sugars would be fine if i had a bowl of plain cheerios and a half banana. also, eggs cheese and a ww english muffin works too. i'm not a yogurt eater so that was never really an option for me (makes me gag!) good luck!

my issue was my morning numbers too but once they switched me to insulin my morning numbers improved drastically. i went through a lot of trial and error to get to the right meds/dosage so i know how frustrating it can be. hang in there Chat Icon

Re: ****official GD thread****

Bumping this bc just found out today i have GD. I wont see the nutritionist till the 19th, so im trying to figure out what to eat in the meantime.

I really have no clue what any of this means, so can someone give me a crash course? Is it possible to be ok on diet alone, and is it possible to become a diabetic afterwards? I didnt have it with my first 2 prrgnancies, so its weird that this time something changed.

What I did while I waited for my first appointment was eliminate the white carbs. That is my weakness. I started to eat more complex carbs (whole Grains). Other than white carbs, I ate pretty healthy. When you go to your appointment, your nutritionist will give you a sample menu.

Bumping bc I too was diagnosed this week. I have to take a nutrition class next week and i don't see the diabetes counsellor until the following week. Very frustrating. However I am a nurse educator and spoke to the diabetes counselor where I work so I can get started. I have been checking my blood sugar 4 times a day. None of my numbers are abnormal (2 hours post meals they are usually 99-105. Before meals sometimes in the 70s. So assuming that do I just follow the diet I put myself on if I see numbers like that? My biggest problem is my morning fasting. I range from 95-106. I'm very upset. I don't know how to control that right now.

Are you eating a protein filled snack between dinner and going to sleep?

I am not. I eat dinner late. I test 1 hour and 2 hours. #'s are normal then I go to sleep. Last night I put a few almonds at my bedside and ate 3 each time I woke to pee (about 3 times). It didnt work.

I always found that my morning numbers were higher if I didn't have a snack before bed b/c of the amount of time that lapsed between dinner and waking up.

I usually eat dinner any time between 7 and 8. I wake up around 9. So that's over 12+ hours between meals if I didn't have a snack. My Dr. explained that if I got up in the middle of the night and tested, I'd likely be within range. He said that the problem is that when you go so long without eating, your body works overtime and your blood sugar spikes resulting in higher fasting numbers. That's why they recommend a balanced snack between dinner and bedtime - i.e. ww bread w/ pb, or a handful of crackers w/ cheese, etc.
