At what point do you worry about swelling?

I never had swelling with DS #1. My feet look like Fred Flintstone feet and are throbbing. I also had to take my wedding ring off b/c my fingers are enlarged. I was at ob on Friday and I quickly mentioned it then but it has gotten 10x worse since. I'm 36 weeks.

I know swelling is normal with many pregnancies but what is extreme?

If the swelling is still there in the morning, I'd call the ob. You can also try weighing yourself and see how much in fluid you gained. If it seems excessive, def let them know.

Re: At what point do you worry about swelling?

I really thought I had major issues going on with the way I swelled.
My feet were like something you'd see on an elephant.
My ankles were horrendous.
My hands didn't swell as bad ,but I coudln't wear rings and sometimes they'd feel stiff from the fluid.
Every time I went to the Dr they were not concerned.
They said I had no protein in my urine so it was just normal swelling.
How anything that bad could be normal was beyond me.
I drank a gallon of water a day, I avoided sodium, I iced my ankles every night and elevated them so high.
Still- horrible.
So it could be normal- but if you are concerned or it came on suddenly, I'd call them

Thanks, I am pretty sure it is just really bad swelling. Of course my mom and everyone around me make me worry.

I could have written this myself. I am also normally a size 8 shoes and I was wearing size 10. FYI I remained swollen for about a week after I had DD.

i thought my swelling was totally normal and it turned out to be a pretty major indicator of pre-e for me. my whole family thought i looked swollen, yet none of them told me that until after the fact Chat Icon
anyway i think the moral of the story is - swelling can be an indicator of something or nothing, and it is by no means a reliable sign of anything. its comparable to cramping as an early pregnancy sign. it could be something or it could be nothing at all. my only advice is that if you are walking and your legs and feet are so swollen that it feels like your legs are going into jello instead of your feet...that's what my swelling felt like. is that normal? i have no idea it was my only pregnancy and it meant bad things for me. if you are truly concerned call your doctor - severe swelling generally comes with actual weight gain in fluid, not just feeling swollen. for me it was 9lbs in a matter of 3 or 4 weeks. if you are concerned call your doctor, but generally if its gone in the morning and back at night and isnt associated with actual weight gain it should be pretty manageable and "normal."
