NYC teacher mommies
Hello all! So I have been reading up a lot on this, and am still not 100 percent on how this will work for me. I know I need to talk to my principal and payroll secretary but I haven't told anyone at work yet.
Anyway, I know that I get 12 weeks (6 paid, 6 unpaid). However, I guess my question is, can I take longer than that? I am due in December and my dh and I are thinking of maybe taking longer than that and instead of coming back in march, coming back as late as possible in order to get paid through the summer. Does anyone know if this is possible?
I would love to take the full 4 years of childcare leave but we are unsure if we can afford it. If I do go back in June, can I decide to take the childcare leave for the next school year?

I think you would have to come back when your 12 weeks are over or take childcare and stay out the rest of the school yr.
If you do come back at end of 12 weeks and work through the end of the school year you can decide to take a childcare leave for the following year.

Re: NYC teacher mommies
You will get summer checks but they will not be for the full amount....they have a percentage formula they use. Your best bet is to speak to HR connect. If you don't come back at the end of 12 weeks you will be forced to take a childcare leave. This leave is written on paper for being an entire school year. You may come back sooner if you can work that out with your principal. Your principal doesn't have to take you back before the school year is up. It's their discretion. Anything you work out you must get in writing or it's their word against yours. You really need to sign up for the uft maternity workshops offered

Re: NYC teacher mommies
Check the uft website they have workshops closer to your due date. I am due in July and went in may. They ask your due date and then discuss your specific options. It was really helpful. I think it's only offered at the queens uft office but is def worth it!
But that being said I was told at that meeting it is up to the principals discretion to give you a half year leave but most won't do it
