16w appointment

Standard is 8 weeks, NT (if you opt to have it because no testing is mandatory) 20 anatomy and then many do a sono in the 3tri.

Each Dr varies and also depends on your insurance. Some limit unless there is a reason and prior approval is given.

That being said if you are haivng twins you will probably have more, if you had issues druign a prior pregnancy you will have more, if you have coplications this pregnancy you will have more.

To the OP - it really depends on your Dr. prior bleedint alone might not warrant it accordign to your Dr.

I had bleeding at one point during my PG and my Dr did n't think I needed a sono. I did have weekly sonos for my entire 3rd tri due to issues.

So basically - Each Dr, insurance and pregnancy is different so you never know.

They do think that too many sonos can be bad for the baby. there is a reason why insurance only covers 2-3 sonos, one for dating the pregnancy at 8 weeks, one for the ultrascreen at 12 weeks, and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I'm sure you were monitored when you had your scare, and if your doctor feels you're fine I am sure you are.

I guess my insurance didn't get that memo Chat Icon

Well, obviously, this applies to a low risk woman.

I just think saying "They do think too many sonos can be bad for the baby" is a bold statement to make. Show me your research. Not trying to start, I'm just saying .. there are MANY women on this board who get frequent sonos for many reasons and I think its not right to just put an opinion like that out there and freak people out.

I'm Just curious- to those of you who think her asking for a sonogram is excessive or absurd--- have you ever had a bleeding scare or miscarriage? And I'm really curious- not asking to start drama. Some of you just seem to have a really strong opinion on this and I'm curious to know if you've been on both sides of the coin so to speak...
I have- 6 miscarriages to be exact- plus multiple bleeding scares this pregnancy alone, not to mention an emergency cerclage that thank God a sonogram showed what was going on because the labor & delivery monitors at the hospital didn't pick up on my contractions... And i was there overnight, totaling about 20 hours. So a sonogram was the start to getting things rolling that ultimately saved my babies.
That all being said I have a sonogram at EVERY appointment- with both my OB and Perinatologist. I've asked both drs if weekly sonos can cause damage- and I trust my drs enough that if there were any risks, I wouldn't be getting one each time.
I don't post frequently on this board because in so many ways I can't relate to what it's like to go through pregnancy and assume that at my next appointment everything's still going to be fine. To be a "normal" pregnant person. i tell my husband how it sucks because I went through almost 9 years of infertility to get and stay pregnant and always hoped if we made it this far I would be able to let my guard down and enjoy being pregnant... And how at 25 1/2 weeks it still hasn't happened. So I totally understand and can relate to the OP wanting a sonogram- that being said I think that had the bleeding been included in the original post not as many people would've jumped to assume it would be out of line to ask for one...

16w appointment

I was wondering why this post was 3 pages. I have to say that it upsets me how this post panned out.

OP, the question seemed to come off and rubbed people the wrong way. No one is asking you to explain why you want a sono. You stated that you had bleeding at 12 weeks and was in the ER. We all know that can be scary and none of us want to go through that. What through people off was the questions along the lines of "how can I get the Dr to do a sono even if I'm not supposed to have one?" (I, of course, paraphrased, but that's what it sounded like). Everyone wants to have a sono but doctors don't typically do that. I didn't have one at my 16 week. Hearing the heatbeat DEF made me feel ok about it. I thought I would want that sono too but the doppler was ok with me.

I, like other people on this board, all have a story that can be heartbreaking. We aren't here to compete on who's story is worse then who's and we really don't need to explain anything to one another. Unfortunately when you post on a public forum it opens up people for whatever opinion they want to give you. I think a lot of people got a little defensive on this post. To that I just want to say that we are all emotional and going through one thing or another. CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!!! Chat Icon

ITA
also the reason why ins companies don't willingly pay for more sonos is because they are cutting costs. there isnt enough research to prove sonos cause problems.

Chiming in late here, but I just want to comment. I got pregnant after trying for 3 months, and have had a healthy pregnancy (knock on wood). That being said I am TERRIFIED if I don't feel her move for a few hours, or if I have a new symptom. I can not even imagine how I would feel if I even had one issue, let alone some of the issues the women on here have gone through. I would probably drive myself crazy (crazier) worrying and I would probably want to see the baby as much as I can. I give all of you ladies who have been through losses and complications huge credit.

First of all, there's a few issues going on here.

The OP insinuated making up a story to get the DR to give her a sono. For no reason, just because she wanted one. When people disagreed with that, she said she had a bleeding episode and wanted a sono.

No one ever said it was absurd. No one ever said it was excessive. I said I would personally not do it, and I do have a MC under my belt. I would not feel comfortable asking for something unless I truly had a medical reason at present. That is me. Of course, others, given their own histories, may do differently. And that is fine. To each their own.

Other people are now stating that too many sonos aren't good, and that is something that I have no personal opinion on. So on that I will not comment.

So there was no "attack" or anything of that sort, in my opinion. The OP became defensive because people disagreed with wanting a sono for no real reason. If she has a reason, that is up to her and her DR. I couldn't care less at this point. But don't post things on a public forum and expect everyone to agree with you.

Really? I didn't make anything up nor was I trying to insinuate anything. Sorry if my original post came off the wrong way or i didn't provide enough information to you!

I then proceeded to tell you I was bleeding o maybe claify and you kept going at it....so then I clarified more and you keep going!

I'm pretty sure there are people on this board that can back me that I'm not making up this story bc YOU don't agre with me asking how I can get a sono from my doctor.

I'm not offended... I really don't listen to people like you and I am aware of the public forum I am on. Coming from the infertility forum where everyone is supportive and gives advice, I guess I was expecting the same thing. I know better for next time.

You are taking this way too seriously. I couldn't be any clearer at the way your post sounded, which caused myself and others to disagree with you. You don't seem to grasp that I am not arguing with YOU, that I don't care what YOU do, I was simply offering a different viewpoint on the information that was presented. I never asked for additional information, what you did/do is none of my business. No one ever said you were making anything up. You're jumping to a lot of conclusions that simply are not there. You are making it seem like I demanded information from you to verify your story, or to justify your actions, and I quite simply did not do that. I feel like you are just ignoring my interpretation of the situation, and at this point it is neither here nor there. So I hope that you get your sono and feel better.

Good day.

16w appointment

I think a lot of the posts on here as pregnant women we would all love to have a sonogram...hell at every visit, but unless its an absolute emergency ie: your doctor can't find the heart beat with the doppler or you're high risk maybe then I am guessing you shouldn't ask?! I am high risk and only had OB sonograms at 10 weeks(first visit at new OB), at NT scan, 20 week(at LIJ) and a 30-32 growth sono. At 28 weeks I will start NST testing because I had a loss but that won't include sonograms.

Also a lot of insurance carriers only allow a certain amount during pregnancy so you may want to check your carrier.

One of the earlier posters about wait times I totally agree. One of my peeves.

I had a 16w sono cause they wanted to do the soinabifida test and get better results on the downs and trisonomy tests.

My OB doesn't do Sonograms at 16 weeks. They just took blood for AFP test plus the regular weight and HB check.

Same for me.

For me personally, I don't ask unless they say time for an ultrasound just because I'd prefer the least amount of intervention and monitoring as possible. This is the way my practice (OB and midwives run it).

THAT SAID, I got pregnant the first time both times and never had a miscarriage (knock on wood) or spotting (knock on wood). So depending upon your own personal history, I can see why some want them and some don't. I don't personally agree with getting them for no good reason BUT that is JMO for ME.

Of course, but even some with single pregnancies have many

Did not want anyone to get freaked out if they had many sonos

Idk I just don't get why this girl is getting ripped a new one bc she wants a sono?

What is the harm in asking? Doc either says yes or no?

I agree.

I get a quick sono at every appointment. Totally healthy pregnancy. Just the way my doctor does things.

My first 2 turned out just fine- same doctor, same amount of sonos.

ETA: I do see a doctor that specializes in High Risk pregnancies. That may make a difference.

I didn't read anything off/bad/misleading in the OP. I think hormones are making some of us OVERLY sensitive and defensive.

If you had bleeding and went to the hospital, and they didn't do a sono, why didn't you just say that to begin with? Your original post made it seem as if you wanted to tell the doc something to get a glimpse just for your own excitement. You never said you had complications. That's why you got the response you did, and I didn't see kitten's reply as harsh. She simply was telling you how it typically works with a healthy pregnancy and you got very defensive...

I'm really not about to get into this again. I didn't add further information in the original post b/c i didn't want to 'throw it all out there'. I did get a sono at the hospital, along with 7 hours of other testing. I'm sure as a woman you may understand that especially if someone was to be more of a private person.

I'm sorry my post came across unclear and i didn't update it with more information.

This post really needs to just end. I'm not on this board to argue or to go back and forth in an argumentative way.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Re: 16w appointment

I just scheduled my 16w appt and was told I wouldn't have a u/s, just heartbeat, and vitals, etc.

I was told that they just don't want to disturb the baby unless they have to.

I had my NT yesterday and it took a bit of time because the baby wasn't moving away from the wall and she had a tough time getting a picture of the neck.

I'm not claiming to be a medical expert here lol, but I had looked up ultrasounds when I went for my first. I read that an ultrasound works with sound waves and those waves heat tissues and things up. Once again, not an expert or anything but...
