Re: Rome and Athens
I haven't been to Athens since 2001 but we stayed at the Divani Acropolis. The hotel was nice but the location made it Amazing!

Rome and Athens
In Athens I stayed in the Grand Bretagne - it was really old world luxurious. Not somewhere I normally would stay (I usually go for more simple), but I was only there for two nights and wanted to splurge.

Hotel Isa in Rome. Great location, yummy breakfast, reasonable rates yet pretty posh!

So weird, I just stumbled upon that place while looking online today! The location is too good to be true and it is not expensive at all.

Rome and Athens
In Athens we stayed at the St. George Lycabettus. It was absolutely beautiful with a rooftop restaurant that allows for a panoramic view of the city. It was also really convenient - across the street from the Metro station and from Constitution Square.

It was nice but wasn't outrageously luxurious. The location though was fantastic. We had drinks/dinner one night up on the roof with a view of the Acropolis - it was just incredible.

Re: Rome and Athens
I stayed at the St Regis in Rome which is lovely but a little far from some of the sights. We almost booked the Majestic which also looked nice and I think the location is a little better. Also the Hassler is amazing.

Re: Rome and Athens
Hotel Madrid in Rome, which is a block from the Spanish Steps. Not luxurious but nice, and they have a very nice roof top terrace with amazing views of Rome and the Vatican. Would you consider a bed & breakfast? I've also stayed at Residenza Canali. Family-owned, tucked away on a quiet side street steps from the Piazza Navona.
I would definitely look for hotels within the historic centre, close to everything and it is so nice to just stroll at night after dinner.

In Rome, we stayed at Rome Cavalieri. You overlook Vatican city, hotel shuttle into inner Rome. It's very posh, John Travolta was staying there when we were there.
