Re: Diet soda

Since a lot of the poor women on here have been scared into thinking they have hurt their babies, I just want to put this into perspective. 50+ years ago, they had no clue about the dangers of toxins during pregnancy. My grandmother smoked the entire time she was pregnant with my mom, and drank on several occasions (one of them being when she got drunk at her baby shower). I am in no way saying drinking or smoking is OK during pregnancy, but a few diet cokes will not hurt your baby!!!

Diet soda

I live with a diabetic so the occasional treat is usually diet. But we stay away from aspartame and look for things sweetened with splenda. Most of the time we do seltzer because that's flavored naturally. As a treat we buy waist watchers. Its diet soda but with splenda. They only have 4 flavors but they are good.

I haven't been drinking any soda because of the caffeine. I'll have caffeine free every once in awhile but that's it!

So I would be a liar if I said I wasn't freaking out now :(

Crashing here!

I am a very healthy eater, and was vegan when I was pregnant, but I had hyperemesis, so couldn't keep anything down for 6 months.

I didn't take one prenatal vitamin during my pregnancy. I just couldn't keep them down. After the hyperemesis I stoll would forget them.

Also, I developed a crazy diet coke craving! I had one a day.

I had a beautiful healthy little boy. No problems, no issues. He had all his limbs and 2 eyes.

Is it ideal to eat your best and not put anything unnatural in your body at all times? Absolutely! Do we want to poison our unborn kids? I would say that's a definite no. But, we are strong and resilient and for the most part, do are your babies. I'm not saying to eat mercury filled fish and go get an x ray, but its important to have a foot on reality. Your everyday lives are supporting this baby. Your body works overtime to keep that critter alive and growing (FYI, my OB said the vitamins are for me more than the baby. The baby gets what it needs from me. I'm the one that needs to replenish! A can of diet soda is fine. Not healthy but unless you are living on an organic farm and cleaning your green hut with lemon juice and vinegar, you are probably surrounded and inundated with a lot of stuff that isn't natural or 100% healthy.

Do the best YOU can. Chances are, if you're bugging about diet soda, you are probably doing ok by your baby. It's the moms who don't think or care about what they give their babies that bother me. And know what? Those kids still come out healthy!

Short of smoking, drugs, and alcohol (although I know a few wine drinking preggos) your baby can withstand most of what you give it!!!!
