African Safari
I'm going this summer with my boyfriend and his family on an african safari. If anyone else has gone, can you tell me which safari clothing you thought were really useful? I think its a waste for me to buy all safari clothing if I don't need it! Any advice is appreciated!

Re: African Safari
The husband and I are going on safari in November and I'm having the hardest time finding cute safari clothes! Everything is so masculine or just blah.
That being said, my parents went on safari a couple of years ago. My dad said his safari jacket with all the pockets was very useful. A wide, hard brimmed hat is a must. They also say to avoid the color blue because of tsetse flies and red because the animals will notice you and you want to blend in with the savannah. Natural fibers and layers are a must. Now if only I could find some stuff thats cute!

Re: African Safari
I have been on several safaris. I would not worry too much about what you wear. Try to stay away from bright colors. Try to wear lots of layers because the temperatures are really low in the morning and very high in the afternoon. Also, have something for the rain. Where are you going? I have done safaris in South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, and India.

Re: African Safari
just went on safari in november in south africa. how many days are you on actual safari? we went 2 nights/3 days. long pants and long sleeves (or layer a short sleeve with a sweater) are key. i agree with PP about no bright colors.
you may very well get dirty depending on how much you are outside the vehicle, so i would not buy a whole new outfit at all.
one outfit i had was long light blue denim jeans and a button down long sleeve shirt cotton shirt. it was comfortable and i felt protected.
on a side note, another day i wore yoga pants. and while they WERE comfortable i certainly was not protected enough, since i got bug bites THROUGH the material. UGH!
hth! where are you going??

Thanks guys! We are just going to Tanzania and for a 10 day safari in August (if you've heard of Tauck tours, we are doing one of those). I'm sort of a last minute addition to the trip (my boyfriend has known he was going with his family since last summer) so everyone else already has safari gear purchased at Bass Pro Shops in Florida. BF's mother told me to go get some stuff but I just obviously dont want to waste money on it if I won't wear it again. Okay, no bright colors--too bad that is most of my wardrobe! Yeesh.
Anyone know a good place to get safari or muted clothing for cheaper?

We are going to Tanzania too, but just Zanzibar. Kenya for the Safari
Ann Taylor Loft has a lot of muted colors and they are having a 40% off sale right now. Was thinking of buying some linen pants and a few shirts.
Have an amazing trip and post pics when you return

I'm sure there are a ton of them, I definitely know Yellow Fever! I'm going to check the CDC site soon!

Re: African Safari
I went on Safari in December. I didn't spend too much money on clothes.
I wound up buying some old navy cargo pants and a few tank tops and tee shirts. We also got hats. We got these baseball hats with flaps in the back to protect our necks. I'm not sure what time of year you are going, but we went and it was in the middle of summer. It was still really cold in the mornings and nights- most safari drives are at these times.
My list would be this: Cargo pants Shorts Pants that zip away into shorts would even be better Tanks and tees Lightweight long sleeve tees Good walkmg shoes Sports bras- those drives are bumpy! Zip up hoody (I brought a light weight one). The safari vehicles usually have blankets, so we didn't need a heavy weight jacket. Rain poncho depending on time of year.
I got natural fabrics and natural colours and they were quick drying. I was able to wash them in the day and they would be dry in a few hours. Again it was the middle of the summer. I didn't ave to worry about certain colors bc we were in Namibia and the only real problem was malaria there.
For the camp dinners at night, I bought a few nice dresses with me to wear in the evening and flats. I found people didn't really get overly dressed up. Also bring a bathing suit or two. Camps usually have pools!
I found old navy a good and cheap place for safari clothes. Besides, the clothes can get quite dirty. We saved money with this and bought a nice pair of binoculars instead. Definitely spend soe money in binoculars!
Also keep in mind there is a strict weight limit on the fly in safaris and you need a soft bag. We didn't do flyin safaris though, but it's still something to keep in mind.
Eta: I forgot about fashion for a safari. Stuff gets dirty too!

Re: African Safari
August is the best time for the migration! I wore cotton and jeans- linen makes me itch
AND dont forget hats!!! my scalp (yes, really) actually got burnt the first day
dont forget ibrofen (advil) for those VERY bumpy rides-sorry if all this was mentioned
another oddity- I wear creme de la mer (a heavy moisturizer) and in my photos you can see the red sand in all my crevasses on my face! I gets everywhere no matter what and just stuck to my face with the heavy cream!

We did everything ourselves but DH and I travel overseas a lot and know how to book these things and get the best deals. I'm sure a TA the specializes in Africa and adventure travel could be helpful. I wouldn't just walk into a Liberty Travel office for this kind of trip
