ear infection moms/ENT/meds not working

1st question- have you been told that when they have an ear infection, that they can't fly?

2- We couldn't get in to see Dr Monte until may. So right now we have an appt with dr Szeremeta on march 12th. I also have an appt with Dr. Cohen on the 15th. Basically just trying to get an appt quickly.

anyone ever use either doctors??? opinions?

3- has anyones child been on 4 rounds of antibiotics and the ear infection not clear up? what next?

This is only my sons 2 ear infection in 3 months, but it will not clear up. He's been on amox, cefdinir, augmentum and now zithromax.

we fly out to florida on saturday and the ped said if the zithromax doesn't work, he shouldn't fly.

1- If there is fluid in the ear, I think there is a chance of the eardrum rupturing. So, if the infection does not get better and the fluid does not go down, no flying.
2- No. We use Zelman at ENT Allergy in Garden City. Love him.
3- This has never happened to us. But by the time he was 11 months, I think he had probably had 8 ear infections. We wound up with tubes at 14 or so months. Best thing we ever did.

AJ had lots of infections. Yes they didn’t always clear up. Most did. I was told she couldn’t have tubes in her ears (Something I wanted) until they were more frequent. I finally got ok after she was average an infection every month for nearly 9m.

Flying with tubes is great, built in pressure relievers. Flying with an ear infection is nightmarish. Its all that fluid behind their ears that’s built up and pushing against the ear drum. So if you get in a place with pressure changes (like the cabin of an aircraft) you feel like something is either trying to explode OUT of your ear or like a dagger is pushing against it.

AJ has always flown with tubes except the trip to NY and she really did notice the difference kept telling me it felt funny and spoke loud and then felt the pop and would comment on that.

I hear you about the need though. I am having my own personal ear issues so I called three ENTs on my insurance until I found one who had an opening that day. Desperate measures…

AJ was on around 6 different types of antibiotics. We rotated to avoid a resistance being built up. I now know there is a way to ‘drain’ the ear but its rather uncomfortable and not recommended for the younger ones.

We live in NJ. My DS had 10 ear infections from Nov - March. Basically back to back ear infection. He turned 1 in Feb and we had tubes put in at the end of March. It was also the BEST thing we ever did. He is turning 5 and still has them in (we put permanent ones in). We get them checked 2 times a year and will probably get them removed this summer. He is built small so the dr has been monitoring them over the years.

We have not had one ear infection in the last 4 year (knock on wood). The surgery literally took 5 minutes and recovery was a hour or two (they needed him to pee once since he was so small and under anesthesia).

My only regret was not doing the surgery earlier. I was fighting it -afraid of the concept of surgery.

Have you tried Hylands Ear Infection medicine? You can get it otc at the drug store. My son has horrible reactions and allergies to ear infection meds but hylands works so well for him.

We all were miserable. Not just her. Which is why *I* kept pushing for tubes. I had a doctor who didn't want to. I should have gone straight to an ENT. Just didn't think of it. I guess a small part of me wanted me to be wrong. But at 15m I all but shoved it down their throats. Got an ENT who said absolutely yes and she had tubes within a month.

Fitting her into the surgery WITHOUT an infection was impossible (literally) she had a fever the night before because she had yet ANOTHER double infection. By the morning (without meds) she was back to normal so they proceeded. They had to suction out the fluid during the surgery and she ended up having the injection hang on which was absolutely PURE misery, screaming, crying, unbelievable.

Once that last infection cleared up tho.. omg day and night better. She had 1 other ear infection from that date to today. She got them in at 17m and she's going to be 5 in August!

totally worth it.

Even when she DID get the ear infection (which still happens even with tubes) it was much less painful and less severe.

Ok, I'll hop off my pro-tube carton now.

Yes, she was in misery. There's little you can do at that age to make it better besides meds.

Only thing I can recommend is to try Suprex!!! Pricey but it was the only thing that always cleared up DS ear infections and he got a ton.

I wouldn't fly with an ear infection. I knew I shouldn't as an adult. I had an ear infection 14 days before I flew and it was bad. I developed vertigo (the doc said it wasn't related but I don't believe him).

makes me feel better to know this stuff, ds is suffering with ear infections alot
