Chronic Ear infection moms

This is all new territory for me as Miranda had one minor ear infection until this past year.
Hudson I believe is on his 5th or 6th ear infection since November and Miranda is on her 4th.
The NP mentioned an ENT consult and said to discuss it with the ped when we see her (she wasn't in today).

Would you move toward an ENT consult for either kid?
Hudson almost always had fluid around his ears even when they aren't infected (we lived at the ped's office getting his ears checked).

Both kids have had snot since October that has not gone away with any of the antibiotics.

Just curious what other moms did when their kids got frequent ear infections and at what point you considered the ENT, tubes and adenoids out.

Thanks! Chat Icon

I went to an ENT on my own - I didn't wait for the ped to refer me to one. They are more experienced and will do hearing tests, etc...Luckily DD didnt need tibes (knowck on wood).

I would go see one - you have nothing to lose! Chat Icon

This is what I did. The Ped wasn't in a hurry to send me so I went on my own. DD also had fluid in her ears constantly and ENT said it can take up to 3 months to drain. The problem arises when it doesn't drain and keeps getting reinfected. When they performed her hearing test, she scored with a significant hearing loss...so bad that is she was an adult, she would require a hearing aid. We were going in to the winter months and after the 3rd consecutive double ear infection...I decided it was time for tubes and I had her adenoids removed as they were enlarged. What a difference! Her sleeping improved immensely and her hearing returned to normal.

Re: Chronic Ear infection moms

Here's our story:
Last year during the fall Alexandra had only 2 ear infect. She was 8months when she had her first EI. Over the summer we did swimming and played all summer, she was fine, cleared up.
Im a teacher and first day of school this year Alex was 15 months she got a double EI that never went away.
our ped by Nov. recommended to see an ENT cause the fluid would not go away and she kept getting EI even while on meds.
We saw 2 different ENT's to be sure that they both said they rec. ear tube surgery (myringotomy). She also had hearing loss from the fluid in her ears and being 18months she was begining lang development so we didnt wanna play with it anymore. We went for the surgery.
That was the HARDEST thing I feel to date, as a parent, i even had to do..to put your child under for surgery taht may or may not help.
Well, Alex had her surgery Jan 5th..since then NO EI, NO antibiotics, NO fever, no throwing up..she is now hearing 100%, talking, and not in pain. It was the best choice for my DD.
I hope this story helps and I wish you and your child luck. If you need anymore info please FM. The surgery was not bad, just the build up to the surgery. GOOD LUCK!!
