Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
I don't think this will change my mind about cruising. Our line of choice is Celebrity although I have cruised Carnival before and was pleasantly surprised! I think this could have happened to any line. Shit happens.

I still don't understand why they couldn't disembark onto another boat. I get that it's dangerous to do on open water but does that mean that if the ship was sinking, there would be no way to get people to safety? It's 2013, there has to be a way. With all the money they are refunding and giving, it may have paid to just get helicopters for everyone!

I still dont know how they say the gulf is any more open then when they tender off to the private islands in the Bahamas (CoCo Cay, etc)
At least in the gulf it's protected on 3 sides by land, where CoCo Cay, etc is wide open.
Then again, maybe being enclosed on 3 sides causes additional tides/wave impact as water hits the shore and comes back?

If you see some of the video footage, the water is very choppy and the ship can't be stabilized with an anchor because the water is too deep. This is why ships will miss a port that tenders when the wind is too high or the seas are too rough. It is dangerous. Carnival is no longer in charge of the ship, the USCG is. I'm sure the USCG knows what they are doing.
ETA: They have lifeboats but as long as the ship is afloat, it is not necessary to use them. If the ship were sinking or something like that, they would absolutely use the lifeboats.

Dear Carnival CEO, Have a press conference AFTER everyone is safely off the ship. Maybe actually help someone.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
Im going on my first cruise this summer. Yes, it got me thinking but I've traveled quite a bit, and to countries with political unrest. This won't deter me from traveling.. if I let things like this get to me, I'll be couped up in my house. I'll be travelling with DD, so I will have extra of everything.
Its like when a natural devstation happens.. do you not go to visit that place? If I had the chance to visit Thailand I'll go in a heart beat! Ish happens, sorry to ramble but my friend's mom asks me the other day.. OMG why would you go on a cruise now..

It's fine, let them think that. More rooms and lower prices for me.
I'll wave at them and say Bon Voyage!

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
The travel industry would be dead if everyone listened to the bad that happens and decided not to go. No one would go to the Caribbean during hurricane season. What if ? No one would go to Mexico because of the drug cartels. No one would go to Disney because of the snakes. and so-on.
This won't deter me from cruising in the future, Carnival is not my choice of lines anyway. This incident could have happened on any other line and any other ship.

Yes, perhaps. But let's look at the facts.
Over the past 4 years, there have been more accidents than over the past 40 years (Costa ship sinking, Costa ship fire, Princess ship fire, Carnival ship fire, Carnival ship fire).
ALL of these ships are owned by Carnival. These ships have been around for the past 10 years+, but these "accidents" just so happened to have occurred in the last few years once the cutbacks began. Why have they all recently occurred? Why only Carnival?
There's a difference between accidents and irresponsibility, IMHO.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
Hear are a few incidents you don't hear about : April 2012 : Allure of the Seas had an engine room fire. March 2012 : Azamara Quest had an engine room fire. January 2012 : MSC Poesia ran aground on a sandbar, had to wait until high tide to be freed by 4 tugs.
Neither of these three are Carnival owned. The first two are Royal Caribbean The last is Mediterranean Shipping Company.
Of course the Costa Concordia was the big news for January 2012, followed in February 2012 with an engine room fire on the Costa Allegra, because it was another Costa ship.
Stuff happens. But it's not a big deal unless the media catches wind of it.
Any incident on board a vessel, whether it be container ship, cruise ship or ferry boat, be it fire or passenger or crew breaking a leg, must be reported to the Maritime Agency of the government where the ship is registered.
This incident unfortunately for those on board, was a big deal.

Well I try to avoid the caribbean during hurricane season and I don't go to places with political unrest but I have traveled extensively through the US, Caribbean, Europe, and China, but haven't made it to other Asian countries yet.
I do agree with the incidents of fires etc. Don't forget all the times various ships have crashed into the docks or hit other things. Some lines have worse records than others, but also accidents do happen. I still think a lot of it ishow the line responds. But there are also sometimes that send their ships out even with issues.

I remember the NCL Dawn had a power outage in the middle of the Caribbean.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
This wont deter me, I dont think this has anything to do with the fact that it was a carnival ship. Ive been on Carnival, Celebrity and Princess and while Celebrity is by far my favorite, my last Carnival cruise was on a brand new ship and was MUCH nicer than the Princess cruise we took (also on a new ship). The ship was clean, the room was beautiful, entertainment and staff staff was great. As for the food, The food was much better than Princess, the food served in the main didning rooms on Princess was inedible. We actually asked the manager what the issue was and he said they said since more people want to sail for less money they need to cut food quality so they can keep prices down.
