Appropriate cartoons
Do u think it is appropriate for a almost 4yo girl who has trouble sleeping at night and is scared of the dark to watch the cartoon teenage mutant ninja turtles?
The episode that was on tv was rats all over the place and a skeleton like character, and fighting.
Having a debate with my husband.
Thx for sharing ur thoughts.

Re: Appropriate cartoons
Well when you put it like that, no lol. But for me the only tv i let DS watch is if its teaching him something. I dont think teenage mutant ninja turtles is good for a 4yr old regardless of if shes scared of the dark or not. Just my opinion.

Re: Appropriate cartoons
It wouldn't be my first choice of cartoon for my DD, also 4. I notice at this age she's starting to get spooked by things so I am a little more careful about what she sees on TV now, cartoon or otherwise, because she does get scared at times.

No. At 4, my DD only watched Nick Jr. Even now at 6.5, I don't like her watching those kinds of shows.

Appropriate cartoons
Nah..not at 4
Here's my reasoning: my almost 5 year old is like 35 in kid years. He will want to watch stuff for an older crowd and sometimes he does - either by accident or I agree. And all goes well until weeks later, he says it's giving him nightmares, or he keeps harping on something he saw in the cartoon. Next thing I know, he's in my bed every night for a week.
That being said, for your own sanity, don't do it. Stick with Nick Jr

Re: Appropriate cartoons
I only let my kids watch Nick Jr, but DH has been showing them Karate kid to get them into martial arts. They routinely ask me for Daniel and Mr. Miaggi (sp?)?
I feel your pain.
& why would a girl want to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anyway? What ever happened to Jem?

I never watched Jem but I looooooooved teenage mutant ninja turtles. I even saw the live show and had all of the action figures. They were awesome! Turtle power!!! To the OP, I personally dont feel like the cartoon is all that bad BUT if your dd is scared at night and the cartoon is a potential reason why, I certainly would not let her watch it either.

Who is Jem.. I totally loved TMNT. AJ watches that, futurama, south park, spiderman, batman, transformers, gravity falls, etc as well as Mickey Mouse clubhouse, Doc McStuffins, Jack and Neverland Pirates, Chloe's closet. Its all just cartoons.
I dont see why it has be girl vs boy, but thats just me.
I think if she was scared at night Id ask why. If the reasons were related to the cartoon in anyway, then yeah, I'd limit late night viewing. I'd steer her to happy cartoons before bed time.
At 4 now I tell her what to dream of. We talk and I say imagine you are on a flying horse and the wind is in your hair and do you have ribbons? what color (etc) and we make something up .. a happy image if you will... I ask her to tell me what happens in the morning LOL

Quoting myself because I know the OP personally - we grew up together and probably watched Jem on occasion!! I liked TMNT too! I actually had the game for my game boy!
X - Jem was "truly outrageous" a rockstar superhero combo girl. Lol.

Re: Appropriate cartoons
Yes, I grew up with lucky and no offense taken. She is a girly girl and probably poked fun at me along the way for watching something more on the masculine side lol
But, my daughter gravitates toward masculine shows...she loves spiderman, sponge bob, and now tmnt....all shows that my dh introduced her too....which I feel are not appropriate for her yet.
She doesn't get nightmares, but I felt like since she already has poor sleeping habits, watching shows like tmnt will not help...Kwim?
Putting good thoughts in her head b4 bed sounds like a good idea and something I would try along with an age appropriate show.

Re: Appropriate cartoons
It's only appropriate if he's the one that is going to spend the entire night calming his little girl down because her father let her watch a "scary" cartoon & dealing with a grumpy kid the next day.

Have fun with it. AJ won't sleep until I finish telling her something to dream of. So it has to be specific, detailed, light and colorful. I've done a flying horse, kite, a worm digging into the ground (down down down the up to the grass) and a fish. The fish was last one I did.
Imagine you are in the water, its not cold water is nice and warm from the sun (rubbing her blanketed arm) you feel all that water around, nice and soft and you're so free and light. You can float anywhere. So you swish your tail and you swim forward. You see other sea creatures and sea weed that sways in with the water back and forth and star fish that crawl on the sea floor, do you see the other fish? They are glittery orange and blue and yellow. Some have two colors; blue and white, red and purple. Your fish is blue (her current favorite color) and you aren't too big or too small. You are just right and you swim so good. Do you see the sunken ship? I wonder what's inside? So your little fish moves along swimming past the other fish and soon you are there. You go into the circle window and see a big room, what's under that table and you can swim there. Do you see the hole in the floor, lets swim around and see what we can find. All day long you can swim and swim and look and explore, what will you find while you are a fishy in the big sea? Will you meet an octopus? can you tickle all 8 arms with your tiny fins? Can you see a submarine? Is there a treasure on that boat? Can you swim into the key hole and see all the pretty crystals? You tell me what you find, ok?
I start off in a regular voice and softly end with a near whisper.
Kiss, i love you and good night. hahaha
Yeah, details details. but it sticks with her. It definitely outweighs anything she's seen. When I don't give her a dream (as she calls it) she'll still use one of the old ones. Since I work some nights she'll be asleep before I get home. The fish was 3 days ago. But she remembers it. This morning she told me that her fish was in the water with a flying horse. Like a seahorse, mama, with wings. And they were racing eachother up and down. haha
I think it encourages imagination and story telling, plus the idea that one is for 'pretend' and other things are 'for real'.
