One tip I got from another mom that helped was to get cloth diapers and lay one down on top of the changing pad cover where the baby's butt would go. This helped save the changing pad cover when he would pee on me. It's bound to happen here and there.
I still do this - I always lay a cloth diaper down on the changing pad cover where his tush will be. When it's a poop diaper, I put paper towels on top of the cloth diaper.

I always throw a washcloth right on top while changing him. We also used to use those wee wee pad looking things on the changing pad cover so I didn't have to wash it every 5 minutes when there was any leakage.

for boys, i was told to fold the top part of the diaper in.
this has worked for me!!
the top part is the area right about the straps. just fold the area in and seal the straps.
