Past due & uncomfy- need advice (kind of long)

I am 40w 5d today and I have been having contractions since Sunday morning. All day Sun. they were anywhere from 3-12 apart throughout the day. We went to L&D that night and I am only 50% effaced and not dialated (been that way for the past 4 weeks). Baby was fine so we were sent home.

I am still getting contractions but now they are about 10 mins apart. I lost my mucus plug on Sunday afternoon and am continuing to lose it, now it's tinged with blood (bloody show?).

I am in pain and very uncomfortable. Haven't slept or been able to eat. I have also been getting chills and the shakes at night.

At my last Dr. appt (Friday) he said I would be going in this Friday night for induction but my cervix seems unfavorable and there is a good chance I might end up with c-section.

I have an appt this afternoon for NST and will be seen by Dr. I am afraid he is going to tell me to still wait until Friday. I am so uncomfortable and exhauseted, that I can't even fathom going another 3 days.

At this point I think I'd rather just go in for a c-section.. Do I get to make the decision on this, or is it completely up to the Dr.? If he agrees to c-section, how long do they usually take to be scheduled- any chance it can be done tonight?

If you got this far, thanks for reading!

I hate to say it but you are goign to have to wait it out. Lots can change in just a few hours at this point so you never know what could happen. Your water could break and then they would probably start pitocin to get labor moving.

Your Dr will not let you say hey I want a csection.

I know its tough at the end but hang in there....it will be no more that 4 days at this point.

GL at the Drs appt and my guess is you will not make it til Friday.

i know that with my practice, 5 days past due - if I requested induction, they would do it. i doubt they would go right to csection (with some progress) although at 40w1d, i was given the option for a csection next day since I had ZERO progress.

if you are showing consistant contractions on the NST and progressing at least a bit, I would have bags in the car. I say the odds that they send you for induction (if you request) are pretty good. At 5+ days overdue, there is no reason NOT to if YOU and your doc can agree on it.

Doesn't hurt to ask.

I have no real advice, but i agree with this... i would absolutely ask... i dont think i would ask for a c-section, but i would ask to be induced.

Thanks for the replies. The only reason I want to ask about a c/s is because he told me that my cervix doesn't seem favorable and an induction will most likely lead to c/s anyway.. so I'd rather avoid that if it's not necessary.

I should also add that at last sono, 2 weeks ago, baby was measuring 8lb 11oz.. I know they can be off by a pound or 2 but that scares me!

I agree to ask to get induced and not jump into a c-section. Once they induce you and give you an epidural then you will be comfortable again. I think the cervix can change very quickly and you could've already progressed nicely since last appointment.

I wanted to add that I was about to deliver Chat Icon and by feeling him internally they said you're going to have a nice 9lb baby. Well he was born at 6lbs 8oz. Don't get too scared by their guess of the baby's weight. Too many times they have been wrong.

GL! Quick and easy labor vibes.

also, if you are losing mucus plug (with blood) that is a great sign! Have them strip your membranes! That should also help to get things moving.

Is your doctor aware of these symptoms? If not, please make sure they know about this just in case it's indicative of infection. No fever, right?

If the NST shows that you and the baby are okay, I would try to wait till friday. I was two weeks late with DD. They did NST's every 3 days and always said she seemed high so they weren't even doing internals at most appointments. They did one on my due date and one at 11 days past due and both times I was only a finger tip dilated. I went into labor the following night before my scheduled induction and delivered without any meds other than my wonderful epi. I know how much it sucks to be uncomfortable and feel like you'll never make it to that induction date, but dc WILL get here one way or another!

I'd wait it out, ask for them to strip your membranes, and then go for the induction on Friday. I wouldn't ask for a c-section, if the induction fails than you'll have a c-section regardless, why not try the induction? Try to rest and relax in the next couple of days, it seems like your body is up to something with the contractions and bloody show! I know it seems so not ideal at all, but try to have sex too, my Dr. pushes that in the end and I heard it really works!

Sounds like you might go in active labor any minute now. I would wait.

I know how you feel. I made it to 40w4d and was feeling so uncomfortable and getting terrible headaches. I ended up being induced that day due to low fluid, but because of fetel decells, had a emergency c-section. As others have said, I wouldn't request a c-section right away, but hopefully your doctor can at least consider an induction at this point. Good luck!

Re: Past due & uncomfy- need advice (kind of long)

I'm just past due and super uncomfortable too. Wait if you can. I would do everything in your power to avoid a c-section (it's just a harder recovery and that's not what you need when greeting your newborn). Even if the induction is not successful, it's still better to go through some trial of labor if you want to have a vaginal birth in the future. I find taking baths helps and distracting myself - I went to a movie alone on Monday, tomorrow I'm getting a foot massage, started reading a trashy book, etc. (outside of being super uncomfortable, I'm starting to enjoy my retirement).
