Anyone dh NYPD/FDNY

My dh has been a cop for 3 years now. This will be our 3rd NYE not together. The first one I was so sad and just got drunk (not healthy I know but its NYE and drinks are flowing anyway lol). Last year I was fine with it. My parents always have a NYE party with our whole family and I just helped cook, serve, etc. This year I think because I am pregnant and so emotional now for some reason I am so sad we won't be together lol He works nights and I actually get sad sometimes that he works nights and we can't spend evenings together which has not really bothered me since we got married.

I guess I am just really venting but seriously I don't know how I am going to deal with these crazy emotions for the next 6 months! Lol I can start crying just my thinking about something sad which I never did before. My dh use to say ice ran through my veins lol

I just think about the times dh is around when other husbands are not. I think I will appreciate this even more once we have children , I know this from also being a child of a fireman, even though my dad missed some holidays he was still around a lot more then most dads.
I am like you and lucky enough to have family and friends to be with if dh working so I just focus on hanging with them , and if possible I try to hang with another single person as my "date". ( Sometimes this is another family member in the same situation , sometimes my 12 year old cousin, sometimes my parent's third wheel lol.)
It also helps if you do something nice either as a couple or with a small group to celebrate in the next couple of days/weeks, then look at it as you get to celebrate twice .

NYPD wife here... In the past 8 years, I've spent ONE with DH. Yes, it's VERY hard. Especially because I feel like this will be the last NYE that it's just the two of us. Chat Icon

Pretty much the same here.
But the upside- DH is now RETIRED (at 41!) and we are having our year of FIRSTS.
First Christmas where we didn't have to worry if he'd get off, first NYE, etc.
I know how hard it is... nobody else will get it unless they have been there.
But it will make you stronger!
Vent away!

Crashing - Dh is FDNY. I don't think we have done New years Eve together since 2006. I don't mind it, if we had something good to do, he would get it off but there hasn't been much going on recently.

On the flip side, he's usually off for Christmas.

Thats great. Dh I feel would never be able to get off unless it was something huge like a death in the family or I was giving birth definitely not because he wanted to go somewhere. Dh had to work Christmas eve and Christmas. He works at night so my mom made an early dinner and he was able to eat but it still stinks.

Nypd wife-I totally feel your pain, I hate his schedule so much! We have spent only a handful of holidays together in the past 6yrs. It's rough having little time to spend together as a family, I work days and he works evenings so we meet each other coming and going most days. I cannot wait till he can retire!

NYPD wife here. Last year was his first year and I cried all night. This year I was a littke sad but I was ok. DH loves his job so it makes it worth it. My dad was NYPD also and h was always the one who took me to doctors appointments and dropped me off at school.

Beung a police wife is hard but I am so proud. I just remember that.

Sorry so many typos! On my kindle.

It's not easy being a cops/fireman's wife. It takes a very strong person to be able to do it. So give yourself a little bit of credit. In the end, new yrs is just another day. Just think to yourself that your husband is ambitious and is out making money to provide for you and your family. When he gets to retire early, you'll be thankful. He'll be able to do lots of things with you and your kids that most other men won't be able to do. Chat Icon

He worked Christmas eve day and Christmas night. We do more in Christmas eve night and christmas morning so he was able to be there. His mutual partner is young and single so he usually let's dh take first pick at Christmas - he always works new years though.

Re: Anyone dh NYPD/FDNY

Thanks everyone. I grew up in a family where there are no cops or fireman. My dad worked normal 9-5 and then worked from home. My mom always worked but part time around our school schedules so I had both parents home all the time. (as a teenager I hated it lol) So it was a huge adjustment to this type of lifestyle. I have really come very far but definitely at times its hard. My dh absolute loves what he does so I am really happy for him. Its nice knowing that I am not alone and other wives feel the same at times.

It's funny - the holidays don't bother me quite as much because I keep busy and surround myself with family but, it's the random weekends that kill me - when everyone is doing family stuff and DH has to work.

I'm grateful that I have made a couple of friends through daycare who's DH's are NYPD and FDNY and can relate.
