Do I need Diaper Bag when leaving the Hospital?

Ok; so I have my bag almost packed. From other posts on here I've read i will only pack for the baby a coming home outfit and blanket since the hospital will provide everything else during our stay.

But should I have a Diaper Bag packed and ready for DH to bring on the day of discharge? We're literally going from the hospital to our home so I can't imagine needing anything during the car ride but I'm a new Mom so I don't really know!

Thanks!

Nope. It's just an extra thing to carry. You can put some extra diapers ointment etc from the hospital into your suitcase.

Do I need Diaper Bag when leaving the Hospital?

Nope!! Another poster suggested bringing one of those recycle shopping bags to stock up on things while you're there. I though that was a great idea!

Unless you're planning on going out between leaving the hospital and heading home - you definitely don't need a diaper bag. This may be something others know, but I didn't - it's good to pack two bags. One for your stay and a smaller bag for labor and delivery. I didn't do that, just had my luggage - I went in for an unplanned induction and was there for over 24-hours. We had made a big mess of my bag and when I needed the emergency c-section they made us get all of our stuff out of the room ASAP - my husband was in a panic and pissed (I went from the OR to a recovery room). So - my advice is leave the luggage in the car and have a little knapsack to bring for l&d.

Chat Icon and I second a small reusable grocery bag for bassinet items to take home and or for things they gve you. You do not need a diaper bag. An outfit or 2 some socks to use as mittens, and maybe a baby blanket of your own if you want.

Thanks!!!

I will leave the daiper bag at home!! We won't be making any stop between the hospital and our house (if we need anythign DH will have to go back out for it). I love the idea of the extra reusable bag for the bassinet items!

The nurses/staff won't think I'm crazy if I empty the bassinet out each night LOL! I'll take all the free things I can get!

I actually have mittens and socks as part of the going home out fit along with a hat and undershirt just in case.

no, you don't need the diaper bag. But I had dh bring an empty bag to the hospital each day and empty out the bassinet. I had ds at Good Sam and I also work there, so the nurses were extra nice. My last day there, one of the nurses gave me almost 100 bottles of similac formula and nipples and like 10 bags of pampers swaddlers diapers, bacitracin, vaseline, and pacifiers and some random nursing assistant just kept coming into my room and giving me stuff to take home. So, have dh bring an empty bag every day so he can bring the stuff back home, so you won't have too much to carry when you are discharged.

Nope. I just packed the take home outfit in my bag and that's it. No diaper bag necessary. Chat Icon

Ok I know I don't need to, but I am going to because it grosses me out to think that my toiletry bag, dirty clothes I load back in the suitcase, worn slippers, etc. will be packed in the same cramped quarters as the baby's newly laundered take home stuff! Plus, for a winter baby, you also need whatever outerwear, hat, blankets to put around the baby after they are strapped in, and that stuff is bulky and takes up room. I know I'm crazy but that's what works for me!

I didn't think about transporting my dirty stuff home. But would those just stay in the plastic bag the hospital gives you? The baby will pretty much be wearing what ever we packed for him/her to wear home so their clothes won't be touching my stuff; and I'll have the extra bag for all the freebies.

Just throw some plastic bags in for dirty stuff and skip the diaper bag. Also, it depends on where you're delivering. At stony brook, there is a ton of closet space in both the labor and maternity rooms so I wouldn't leave stuff in the car unless you're packing a crazy amount. I didn't want DH to have to leave and go to the car. I didn't get to my room until midnight and we were exhausted and starving, so not having my stuff right there would have sucked for both of us.
