has anyone gutted and rebuilt a bathroom before?
the bathroom is our next project, and dh wants to do it himself
it's not a big bathroom-is 5x8
we'll have to remove the bath fitter, bath tub, toilet, tile, vanity etc., but we're not moving the position of anything
we'd be tiling the floor and the tub
the only thing i think we would have to contract out is a new vent fan
dh is handy, but is he crazy too?

Re: bathroom diy
We did our main floor - and only bath in the house until upstairs is done - ourselves. We started on 1/1/12. It was a lot of work and took a lot of time bc we both work full time and have DD. . It also didn't help that it was an unplanned reno so we did not have all of our money ready up front. We won't do that again!
We lived with a completely gutted bathroom for about 3 months. In April the tile in the shower went up and the floor went down. The wainscotting and painting happened in May. Our new vanity arrived in August and the granite & sink were installed in early September. It was a long, slow process.
If your DH is handy and willing to learn and has patience then no, I don't think he's crazy. If you have another bathroom to use while in reno, it shouldn't be that bad.
ETA: DH is an electrician and the reason we started the reno was bc he wanted to install a vent fan but our walls & ceiling were plaster so it all just snowballed. If you need someone to install your vent fan let me know!

When we bought our house, there was a tiny bathroom in the master BR. We doubled the size of it by taking half of a walk in close that was next to it and completely gutted the whole thing and started from scratch. It definitely took longer than DH originally planned - some of that due to delays in things that had to be ordered, but some of it due to running into unexpected things that had to be done with pipes, etc. DH said the one big thing he learned was that when we do the next bathroom (hopefull this Spring!), he will make sure we have EVERYTHING already in our possession before he begins any part part of the work.

We are in the middle of this now. I do not think I would do this if I had to do it over.
Just to give you soem perspective on what we have done so far. We gutted our entire house top to bottom and have no fear of projects. We do not pay people to do work we can do ourselves.
It is our only bathroom, its 5x 6.6. We took it down to the studs. We started the day after thanksgiving and moved out for 2 weeks. We can only work nights and weekends. As of right now there is a tub, tiled surround, all new sheetrock, tile floor and a toilet. I am going to paint tonight and then hopfully install sink over the weekend and do soem remaining tile work. We did not move plumbing and we did install a vent that was not there originally.
Hardest job so far - setting the tub. Easiest - isntalling and venting new fan.

We (well DH) built our new full bath from scratch in part of what used to be a bedroom. It was a ton of work and stress but it came out beautifully. I think if your DH is handy, willing to research the right way to do everything, and good at following through with projects then I'd say go for it!

Re: bathroom diy
DH remodeled out 1/2 bath and had to move the positions of the toilet and the faucet. We also had a wall between the toilet and the laundry area.
There is now a mirror up over the sink and accessories, but here is the post of what DH did. Oh, and your DH could definitely do an exhaust fan, DH just re-did ours yesterday by himself. Had to cut through the outside of the house and everything since it wasn't exhausting properly the way the previous owner had it.

DH did everything except the tiling (which took the longest). The gutting, rewiring electric, exhaust fan, re insulating, putting sheetrock up, installing tub, vanity, mirror, fixtures. It took him about 5 days. The tiling took another week, so your looking at 2 weeks. We tiled everything floor to ceiling, so that is why it took longer. We also used big tiles, so since the house settled and some walls are uneven, parts of the wall had to be built out to place the tile correctly. I would totally do it again, so would DH he is going to do our downstairs bathroom eventually. We spent money where we needed too and didn't cheap out on main things, so him doing most of everything himself saved us alot.

Re: bathroom diy
Dh built our bathroom from scratch and we still hired a guy for tiles. Imo its worth the money!
My dh and his step dad did all the renos in our house and the only people we have ever hired were tiles for bathroom and electrician to hook up to lipa ( dh even ran all electric). Tiles have to be done right imo
Eta we had tiles floor to ceiling and in shower and shower floor. Mud job too and it too 2 days. Bathroom is pretty decent size.
