I do-but I also have a pad over my table to protect it..... I jsut like to have the extra protection!

I use both, because the tablerunner doesn't cover the area where you would eat (on the sides).
However the "head of the table" just eats on the runner.
I like the look of both because they match well.

yes....me too.
Similar here for my dining room table. But I barely use placemats..when I use the dining room table I usually have a table pad and cloth on.

We use placemats most of the time.
Sometimes I use a runner for decoration.
A lot of times I use a runner over a tablecloth for protection and decoration.
