the angle is up high and you have to crane your neck to see.
you have to hide the wires in order for it to look acceptable.
you need to put the equipment some where..... hopefully not on your mantle.

overall, I think it takes a nice focal point (the fireplace) and ruins it.

I had my TV installed over the fireplace for several reasons. It allowed for better furniture layout we also had it wired so all the components are in the hallway closet. We see no wires and I don't think the viewing angle is high. Good luck!

Mine is above the mantle bc we really had no other choice...there is only one other wall it could go on, but then we couldn't have seating on that wall. Pro is that we don't need another piece of furniture in the room (like an entertainment center or TV stand) to hold it. Con is the wires, but DH has done a pretty good job of concealing it, so it's not really too bad.

TVs above the fireplace are way too high IMO. Typical TV position is eye level when you are sitting down.

I dont like the look of it. The man at PC Richards said it is NOT good because the tv can get hot from the fireplace.

I never liked it but we didn't have an option when we moved into our new home.

At first it seemed a little high, but we have an angle bracket and it is fine. We also have a direct vent gas fireplace so it doesn't get that hot above it, we really haven't use the fireplace much though.

I think if you can sit far enough away that you're not holding your head at an uncomfortable angle to view it's fine. In a smaller room I don't think it would feel good on your neck to watch it for long. I would find out if the heat is really an issue. I think you absolutely need to put the wires in the wall and hide the box for it to look good.

Our tv is on the wall with the wires in the wall. The box is in a nice piece of furniture below it. We bought an infrared remote (that was kinda pricy) so it works with the doors to the cabinet closed.

For my DH and I, there are no cons to having the TV hung on the wall. We love it.

Re: Tv above mantle--pros and cons?

Typically anything that you are viewing should be at eye level. You shouldn't have to move your head or eyes at all to see the screen. However, sometimes rooms are big enough, and tv's are far away enough that you don't have to do this.

Hanging a t.v. above a mantel isn't the best for t.v. itself.

Well it's not a question of putting it on the wall (it'll go on the wall either way, above mantle or not). I just am not sure about the heating thing...I read mixed reviews online. The one nice thing would be you can also see it from the kitchen too...but maybe instead a corner wall attachment? Or put it on a different wall but have the arm attachment be able to swivel?

We have it above the mantle.

- I don't really feel a neck issue and we've had it for three years. Our basement is unfinished so it's our TV room and I watch A LOT of TV.

- Our wires are inside the wall.

- Our equipment is in a cabinet to the right of the mantle.

- Totally agree it ruins the focal point. I wish I had it recessed and put a painting or mirror over it.

eta: we have a gas FP too - the heat hasn't been an issue for us and we use the FP frequently.

Re: Tv above mantle--pros and cons?

We just moved ours above our mantle last week. I'll get used to it, but it's certainly too high for my liking.

I was not a fan. When we were looking at new houses most of them had this since they didn't have family rooms. I just felt it ruined the look of the fireplace. That said we bought a house that does have a family room with a fireplace and we hung the tv. I have grown to really like it.

I think it takes away from the beauty of the fireplace. But that's just my opinion.
